I don't believe that there are players who genuinely think the game plays well currently, I think that's the Devs hiding and spouting a plain lie. Either they are blind, or they are talentless... but it's pretty clear the game is devoid of any joy.
Recently I've been following discussions about BioWare, and how they have been reduced in size with many layoffs. The truth is FC and Fifa before that have been sliding, and either the management team is terrible or there is a lack of talent with the Devs themselves... but the writing is on the wall.

The gameplay is getting critisized regularly here. I know people who stopped playing completely after this Refresh patch yet, as you say, EA seems to think the current patch has been a success.
2 types of people like the current gameplay, the pros who need to play the game a certain way (unrealistically quick) for tournaments and those that have absolutely no idea of how a game of football should be played. I'm sure neither have actually played football in real life to understand the biomechanics of it.
In it's current state, players receive a pinged pass and in one motion, control, turn and dribble in a split second - it's horrific.
I have to give EA a little credit, they did create a game that was on the right track in terms of simulation and realism so they know how a game of football should play and obviously spent millions on research and development but that money could've been saved if they just based the gameplay of FIFA Street because that's how it feels like. The speed, dribbling, passing, turns and general biomechanics of this game is so unrealistic and arcady it's embarrassing that so called fans of football are claiming to enjoy it.
There is more competition for EA now then ever if rumours are to believed so they should be worried if they continue down this arcade style gameplay road.
