The Art Of Defending...

I'm coming back to Fifa (EA FC) after years of being away, so I can accept there will be many new concepts, buttons and ideas I'll need to learn, but the simple basics of defending within EA FC 25 I don't understand, and from what I can see form people who are ex-pro or people who stream the game I haven't found one where the match is a tight 1 - 1, all matches go 3 - 0 (someone quits) or 6 - 6, and the entire concept of a balanced back and forth tense match doesn't exist (before you start typing - but it's a computer game - have fun - get good) none of those are answers to the question, why can't no one defend (and that's not the same as scoring one goal and passing it round the back)

Again I'm basically a new player after all these years. I've watched the videos, second man press, and use partial press for the cut back, don't dive in, use L2 & R2 for faster Jockeying - I accept all that, but a decent player when you second man press him with pass into the vacant space left by the other player (and the players take so long to recover it's game over (and you know when someone has a one on one with your keeper 98% of the time it's a goal) so don't second man press? Ok...

I'm left with having to win all my one v one battles with attackers...so people have perfected skill moves and faints to the degree that you can just shack the stick continuously to keep our defenders double guessing, the movement of the faints are so much faster than our (my) ability to fast jock left and right...so what do you do...

I'd love some solid useful applicable information on how to defend, forget the meta, forget saying, play five at the back - I'm talking about a fundamental ting that can be practiced that will improve the success rate at which you can be a better defender...or it's just a game and I should look to out score my opponent and that's all EA FC 25 has to offer?

  • @VinEnzo Switch between 3-4 defenders and use second man press sparingly. Like you said if you hold it down you will just make space for them. Anders is probably the best at this is you want to learn how to do it. You also need to lear to jockey and go from sprint to non sprint in a hovering motion.

    Who is Anders?

I have two ideas when defending, I'll explain them and you can maybe help and decide if they're being used incorrectly.

Second Man Press: I use this when I'm looking to cover the passing land and I allow the computer to press the ball - and if the computer gets into a good enough position, I switch and try and take over

Partial Team Press: I use this when I want to take on the one v one, and I want the computer to cover the possible passes they have available.

I also try, and it's a work in progress - but when I'm jockeying I look to use the faster jockey when I have more than an inch of space between us, and if I'm closer I look to switch to just the standard slower jockey, I feel they put in a better cleaner tackle when using the slower one.

...this is all I have right now, and even this isn't stopping some of the 6 - 2 matches I'm in. I know I've got to take time to learn it, but it feel that the fundamentals I'm practicing might be wrong.

@VinEnzo He is the pro who went I dunno 300 games undefeated or whatever it was a few years ago in wl. He won the pro scene last year I believe. You can watch his videos or other peoples break down of his defense if you want to see how he controls 4 defenders at the same time by swapping. That’s how he pinches the offense then switches to a cb to intercept the pass once the offense player is boxed in.
