Can’t add friends FC25

My son can’t add friends in FC25. The privacy setting are all set to everyone. He is on Xbox x. The person he wants to add is on PC. This shouldn’t matter from what I’ve read. Error message just comes up “friend request rejected”. His friend can’t add him either so they can’t play. Please help. Thank you
