My understanding is that if you cut or trade a player the "penalty" you are responsible for on your cap is the player's bonus money.
When you aquire a player in trade you do not inherit the player's bonus. This potentially saves you a lot of money and also makes it easier to trade the player later because you will not have any "penalty" $ hit your cap for doing so.
I believe what season the penalty money hits your cap depends on how many years are left on the players contract with the majority hitting the first season.
What have have found is I still have the bonus after I trade a for player. In 23, I always traded a higher player with less years for a good player with a ton of years left and then built them up. But in 25, I did that and still had the same overall salary and bonus. I did this like 5-6 times before I realized it and now I’m screwed.
