Auto running in Superstar

Why do I lose run control over my player in Superstar mode?

On some run plays I get “poor route running” because I am supposed to run left, I push the stick left as the ball is snapped, and my player runs forward and right.

Even more annoying is when I pick up 5-6 yards on a run, hit a defender, NEVER move my stick from pressing forward and my player starts running backwards and I end up LOSING yards so it wasn’t getting pushed back as I don’t get credit for the forward progress.
