Superstar mode jersey number issue

Madden 26

So I started a rtg in ncaa26. Imported my player to madden. Got drafted by the saints. My jersey number is the same as my college number which was cool. However I wanted to change that . In the edit player section I found where to change numbers. I see every number is available 0-99 . Im on the saints ,I know 41 is obviously taken, however it let's me choose that number .

Also during preseason games my number changes each game. First game i was number 2,second game I was number 19?? I didnt edit or change numbers prior to the games. Is that normal ? Or a glitch? Why a different number each game?

Im looking for the most realistic (as realistic as a video game can get) experience. Would i have to manually go through the roster and look for what jersey numbers are not taken? Also what's up with my number changing every pre season game? Is this happening to anyone else? Any help would be greatly appreciated. This is my first time playing madden.
