JSON file downloaded
Madden NFL 2020 for Windows PC.
I was finally able to plug in a product key and download this game,
but all it did was download a JSON file - what else is there, where is the game itself?

Where did you receive the code from and I take it you downloaded it through the Origin client?
Some downloads might experience issues depending on what programs are running in the background or anti-virus systems. Details on that can be found here.
If you're on VPN, I recommend disabling that. A Clean Boot will disable all non essential Microsoft startup programs. We can always try running a Clean Boot and then immediately launching Origin as Administrator (right-click on the desktop shortcut>Run as Admin) to see if the installation completes.How to Clean Boot your PC
