madden does not follow nfl rules

That is a major oversight if correct.  I hate overtime rules, even the correct ones.

It needs to be sort of like college does it I think.  I would give each team the ball at their own 20.  5 minutes each and whoever scores the most on their drive or gets the farthest downfield wins.  If they tie, do it again.

Did you have to punt the ball?

The NFL OT rules say that the FIRST team to possess the ball in OT can either kick a field goal or score a TD.

If they kick a field goal then OT goes on until the time expires or the other team matches the field goal or scores a TD.

If the second team scores a field goal then it goes into sudden death.

If the first team doesn't score then it goes into sudden death.

He said he never got the ball so I'm assuming the other team won the toss, got the ball, kicked a FG and got the win right away.

The only question may be did time expire?  It is easy in madden with 6 minute quarters to keep the ball the entire quarter.   If he was playing someone online I could easily see them being smart enough to run the clock down and kick a last second FG to win. (Heck, I've come close to having a single drive last an entire half before online).  If this was the case then the win was legit for the other guy.

I have yet to have an OT game online. ☹️

so you were never allowed an opportunity to possess the ball? Your opponent only kicked a field goal? Then the code is wrong. Madden does not follow the rules  they misrepresent the NFL and the NFLPA. 

Your interpretation of the rule is wrong. If you catch a TD, Your opponent does not get a possession. If you kick a field goal then he does. If time expires OT continues. But Madden does not always follow the rules of the NFL. It is Madden not NFL.
