Play action pass pro needs serious work
The purpose of play action is to INCREASE the amount of time a QB has to throw.
Sadly, the exact opposite happened in this game.
Issues needed to be addressed. (Along with reasonable fix suggestions) are as follows:
1. O lineman abilities do not activate on play action.
Solution: I'm not sure why this us the case but this MUST change. Top tier o lineman don't become "mere mortals" just cause a play action pass is called. Simple as that.
2. Everyone blocks 1 on 1, regardless of the front.
Solution: Assign double teams in stock plays, and allow us to "re-assign" them vs superstar rusher.
3. Blockers with no pass rush threat do not "help" or "peel back" vs free rushers.
Solution: much like "drift logic", coding needs to be implemented allowing a lineman who does not having a pass rush threat to "look for work". Far too often you've got lineman sitting stationary in a blocking stance while their teammate is who's just got beat let's a rusher through free. This makes no sense.
4. Play action pass pro (currently) only looks like inside run compliments.
Solution: Make play action pass pro actually LOOK like their running compliments. There are countless play action plays which are supposed to be married to outside runs, but their blocking scheme fools no one. Easy to decipher from run and pass. The goal is to MOVE THE POCKET to either side...strong or weak respectively.
5. A.I. Defenders rarely "bite" on playaction regardless of their Play Recignition rating.
Solution: This not only needs to apply to men in coverage, but to rushers as well. The point of play action is to open mid level windows due to the threat of the run. Now I get it if you haven't yet established an effective ground game, but if I'm running the ball down a team's throat, there's no way they're going to immediately drop back in coverage when I call play action. Unless of course that player has a high Play Recognition rating. This leads to another conversation about play Recognition needing to be able to give Defenders a "beat" on plays and concepts ran repeatedly, but I digress.
6. Bring back Center Awareness.
Solution: See Madden 18 for a template here. Made all the sense in the world. Bring back back.
