This is one of my top 2 disappointments with MEA, not being able to customize companions, as well as the limited choices we have for skill choices. After completing my first play through (339 hrs), I had at least 18 unused skill points for each of my companions. I think this goes hand in hand with being able to equip them, give us enough skills to choose from that we can have them equip a certain type of weapon or skill based on what direction we take them. I guess I'm thinking in terms of the system for ME1 when it comes to equipping and leveling up skills. Would be nice if each companion had a locker on the Tempest where we could make those changes. Overall I loved MEA, but this is an area that needs more work.
Yeah from a functional point of view the companions seem little more than a bit of window dressing, but if I'm honest this change came with ME2 for me already.
Sure I still had options to give them weapons and choose their skills but I didn't really do much with that, nor in ME3. In ME1 it really mattered what your companions did but that also meant a lot of pausing and assigning orders. I actually was fine with that and I played the game up to the hardest level. With ME2 people got more flow but it also lost that intensity little by little so when ME3 came around I didn't really care about difficulty levels anymore. Same in ME:A. I only play Normal Mode and the rest doesn't interest me.
I know may people asked for a change in combat but I really think this is what set in motion that companions have become less and less important in combat. Still, wouldn't mind a change of clothing for my companions. That at least they can still do without upsetting something in combat I'd say. Maybe Peebee can get some clothes that look more like she would survive on Voeld at -51 Celsius. I still worry that one day her belly button might fall off or something.
