character appearance gone in main game...where is it stored?

I came back after maybe a week away, to ME3, loaded game and hit continue -- put me back where I was at on rannock fighting reaper -- except that my character's appearance is gone.  I've had the same appearance (pretty much) since ME1, and now it is different?

I quite, and reloaded the game from the select career page -- it took me to the beginning of the reaper fight -- (had been in middle of that fight),  but the character is still different!  I've never had the appearance of the character I have in this game -- how can this be so messed up?

Where is character appearance stored?  Locally?  It doesn't seem to store the appearance file with  the game, since if it did it should have picked up my normal appearance, no?

What do I need to do to restore my old character appearance?  If I know the file I can try restoring it from MSWin's previous versions maybe?

Thanks...

  • The character's appearance is stored in the save file. I don't know what could have gone wrong to cause it to disappear from all of your files. Do you play with mods, or have you played with mods before?

You can use Gibbed's save editor to modify your character's appearance. My suggestion is to start a new character, recreate the face to your liking, then export the face and load it into your current playthrough using the save editor.

It's recommended to save a backup of your save folder before you do this. (Documents - BioWare - Mass Effect 3 - Save)

    1. Start a new game and create the character to your liking.
    2. Save the game, then quit.
    3. Download the save editor here: https://www.nexusmods.com/masseffect3/mods/749
    4. Unpack and run it.
    5. Load the newly created character in the save editor.
    6. Once loaded, go to the 'appearance' tab.
    7. Click 'head morph' and export the file.
    8. Load the save file of your actual playthrough in the save editor.
    9. Go to the appearance tab as before, but now import the head morph you saved.
    10. Save your edited file in the save editor. It's best to save as a new file instead of overwriting one in case something went wrong.

You should now be able to load the edited file into Mass Effect 3.

I did end up creating a new character and it doesn't have the problem.

I haven't gone so far as to try modding it with the save editor.

Will have to check that out.

Sorry took so long to respond, I just figured, I was screwed, so started new game and new playthrough...*sigh*
