His loyalty mission he was more nervous than anything and fully willing to own the fact that he may have stuffed up. Yet he did the right thing by getting help.
Sometimes its easy to forget they are all young - and thrown right into the worst possible senario from day 1 in andromeda.
His reactions where real. He isn't perfect and that's okay. He still has growing and learning to do, really most of them do other than the ancient Draak.
Still, this is about how his romance needs improvement and how straight female players very often get the short end of the romance stick compaired to male players. That it's really past time this was addressed and improved, at the least we should get one decent human male option.
I fully agree that the female Ryder deserves a better male LI option. The thing is, everything I stated about the Liam character shows why he cannot be it. Liam was a terribly written character. A crisis response specialist who freaks out when anything goes wrong. He's frustrated about relations between the Angara and the initiative even though they don't have one yet because they just met. And he comes up with a plan that puts people's lives unnecessarily at risk and just makes it worse with each step and the only responses are basically that it's OK because he meant well. His dialogue and reactions are all over the place and nonsensical to top it all off. There is a reason why if you do a search for best to worst characters of ME:A the Liam character is at the bottom of them all.
What Liam did, didn't put anyones lives at risk. He only thought it may have.
What happened to those Angara was completely separate to Liam giving them those specs. In fact he pulled people together with his actions, human and Angara. The Angara in question where just as willing to take a risk, but what happened with those pirates was totally separate, they were in the wrong place at the wrong time and the pirates where using them for slave labour, thats all. None of it was even Liams fault but it was a good thing someone made friends with and kept tabs on them or they would never have been rescued. By doing so he cemented the friendships with them even further.
What he did was build bridges and friendships where the nexus was unwilling to do so. Sometimes you need to take in the whole picture. He wasn't wrong about the nexus council being unwilling to form bridges, they are worse than the citadel council.
Liam, like Kaidan who was also often at the bottom of lists is a very miss understood character because for the most part he is a normal, decent human being without a tradgic backstory (or in Kaidans case didn't need to be 'fixed). For some reason a lot of people find that 'boring' but not everyone.
A lot of what ive read on tumblr from people is simply that Liam is 'boring'. Well his romance certainly is because it has no spice what so ever.
You want to talk about disappointing romance options? Try having zero team members available and 1.5 NPCs to choose from: Gil and Reyes. Reyes is typically the better choice, too, since his personality is much more interesting than Gil's.... and to add insult to injury, not only do you only get a dance with Reyes (which is a clear swap from SisRyder since you stare at the ceiling while you dance), but Gil is just a fade to black. Can't even have a good conversational flow with Reyes, either, since he stays on Kadara.
DA:I did this better. ME3 did this better. Why did MEA go in reverse?
- Anonymous9 years ago
Playing SisRyder, I had to google Reyes's romance, because it felt so incomplete I didn't feel like we even knew eachother much yet, and I didn't even realize there was a fade to black until I read an email that implied as much.
I kept waiting for the next scene. I felt cheated that I was now locked out of trying a better character. Jaal and Peebee are the only barely half-decent options, which I measure in no small part with "Exposure" and Intimacy.
WHY in the absolute reaper-loving heavens do some romances get to have some measure of quality (and nudity) while others are barely more than flirting and only get fade to blacks?

Yes. I already said I get why the m/m romances needed a fix first. Overall you guys have had it the worst over all the games.
Romances for straight female players across the board comes a close second. Even in DAI where we get Cullen, Iron Bull or two guys who are *.
As for Mass Effect, Garrus and Kaidan are the only ones who carry through for us, but at least we got Kaidan in the first game.
Now this time Jaal is the only one with a decent romance. If you arent into seeing naked aliens ur pretty much out of luck. Liams romance is even worse than Reyes.
So yeah we arent saying we have it worse than m/m players, but we don't have it much better. We are still almost as over looked and it's past time both are addressed when you look at what straight male players get.

I know right?!
Why would they also claim plenty of banging when only 3 out of all the romances even get an on screen sex scene?
Why unbalance all of the romances this way? Equalize them all, is it really that difficult?
If they want to make an ace char - make one who specifically says they are ace. If they want to make a character like Liam where sex was obviously involved (he said as much). Give them the sex scene. Don't give it to one and fade it for another. Give players proper balanced choices so we can take the romance we want - with all the trimmings.

Sorry. My post might've come out too head strong. Didn't mean to imply you downplayed it! Me thinks the frustration had me with twitchy trigger typing. XD
As for Reyes? Its sad that the bulk of your relationship with him is hearing all your team members talk about how its a bad idea. Well, except for Vetra. She first asked me if I'm the queen of Kadara, then referred to me as Pathfinder-Baronese. She's my new BFF, second to Jaal. Cause seriously, one of my favorites in this game.
I ended up doing the same thing...googling to see if that really was the last cutscene...and it was. He either needs his own DLC (which should be free since its so bloody incomplete, but you know it won't be) or just...I don't know. A patch to give us more options? Bring back some voice actors for some pronoun switching lines...make more NPCs viable... I'm sure SOMEONE out there has a Ryder-Tanner ship headcanon. Just...something....and make all the current romances something good to look at. WITHOUT LAZY CODING. Its annoying that the animations clip and look weird because they didn't reanimate for changes of gender (example: Peebee and SisRyder / Reyes and BroRyder).
I think we could all write multi-page essays as to why the romance options in this game was one of its bigger disappointments.

Yeah โน๏ธ
Get this one. Liam right there when SAM stops Sara's heart -- zero reaction!
He makes a tiny joke / comment about it after the fact and thats it.
So much for Mr. Freakout. Doesn't even care the girl he likes is dying.
Yeah, there's so much that should have been there and it isn't. Like the zero reaction to Ryder's "death". And on top of it all, the fact that we didn't get a decent sex scene. After the fade-to-black couch scene, most of us were certain that more would follow as it was just the beginning of a potential romance. I mean, c'mon I'm a straight female player with no interest for alien butts (since Jaal is the only one who gets a half-decent romance). I am not even the kind of person who likes to complain about such stuff. I was fine with Kaidan's romance. Is it too much to ask for something equivalent for Andromeda? I don't even think we are always a second thought, like others may feel. I was fine with DA:O and Alistair... I even got the chance to marry Cullen in DA:I. But hey, I wanted MORE Liam (or Reyes at least, whose romance was even more lacking)!

Kaidanโs romance was great!
I loved Cullen as well - although the Inquis being fully dressed during the after sex part was somewhat odd - at the least she coulda slipped on one of his shirts or something, or a sheet if they wanted her covered.
I didnโt have such great luck with Alistair on my first DA:O pt, it actually put me right off dragon age for a long time (didn't pkay it again until much later), my Alistair ran off and never came back ๐ญ
And DA2 I waited too long to choose, by the time Hawke started flirting it was too late, oops. So she romanced no one.
Why Liam didn't at least get as good as Kaidan, ill never know.
Reyes is a side fling, not even an achievement so I kinda get his romance being less, donโt really agree with it when BroRyder gets more m/f options, but get it.
Liam at least should have been inline with what Cora got !
Why we always get less then male players is baffling and also unfair.

Yes I know, gay men got the worst most of the time, my sympathies. And I hate that they get so much hate whenever they claim their piece of the cake. It's so laughable. No problems at all that there were and are tons of opportunities for f/f action - nobody is complaining or even asks why there has to be so much. No "feminism" aguments there, no "SJW" arguments, no stupid terms at all. All perfectly fine. And well, since straight male players always claim they are the majority and everthing should center around their wishes... so I have to assume that this is purely fanboy service. Hot girls in action. And it never was ment for the "real" f/f people. Just think about it for a moment... isn't it sad? And I mean it in all honesty.
And forgive me when I center my thoughts mostly around the straight female issue - at least you can/could also profit if they would decide to make this chars bi like they did with Kaidan. Actually I think DA II wasn't bad with the "all romances are bi" decision. Everyone got what he/she wants.
About the "alien naked *" - laughable. I was: "WTF" when I got that scene at the Tempest. Two guys "playing the armor game" and well who would guess... it's the "ugly alien butt" you'll get to see in all it's beauty. Don't get me wrong, I adore Jaal, I adore him much more than Liam but it's so typical. Liam is wearing his pants. Why? Because that scene has to work for the SMs (Straight males), too and who would dare to offend them by showing an attractive male butt that isn't their own chars butt ("banging" Cora)? Sorry, I don't get it and this is the only "logical" explanation I can come up with...
As for the question about "ugly alien butts" in general, think of it just for a moment. And including all the MEs into this, we have:
Ashley I for the SM - human
Kaidan for the SF - human
Liara for the SM - blue human
Miranda for the SM - human (barbie doll)
Jack for the SM - human
Tally for the SM - alien? colored human? Who knows because you'll never get to "see" her, she's a "platonic love"
Jakob for the SF - human (a..ole. And I HATE it who BW made my Shep "physically" react to him whenever I had to let her talk to him "in private" Just thinking of it makes me want to vomid...)
Thane for the SF - alien
Garrus for the SF - alien
Ashley II for the SM - human (barbie doll - why BW, why...???)
Liam for the SF - human
Cora for the SM - human
Jaal for the SF - alien
Peebee for the SM - blue human
Vetra for the SM - alien (wow, ALIEN!!!)
Maybe it's just me but it seem that SFs have a lot "alien action" if you would count that as "action" at all... why so? And our "love interests" seems to be real "aliens" - we also get Mordins advice (funny nonetheless - I love it and I love Mordin) for "saver sex"... (!)
Back to ME:A, we have "action" with Jaal and I like it. But it also makes me think, hey, does he even has all the necessary parts needed to make my Ryder "really" happy? We'll never know... so conveniant to give SFs all these "ugly" aliens, don't you think? And don't let me start about the "stories" - a "but the prize" Jakob-as..hole who's cheating at you? Thane who we have to see dying and that's it? There are just TWO romances you could think of somehow "normal" and one of them is... alien.
And then the Liam "romance".. wow... most underwhelming "romance scenes" ever...
All in all I would call it "cheap" and "cowardly". Hey BW - we are playing your games, too. We love your games, too. We pay for your games, too. And we aren't a "minority" anymore. We are Legion. So we straight females would like to get the same attention as your straight male customers. Because we normally don't complain that much doesn't mean we like it. We want "normal" men without "heartbreaking" stupid stories attached.
We want appropriate romances with appopriate "hot cinematics", too. Butts and B*bs for girls seems perfectly fine and ok to show in games so at least give us some attractive butts if you afraid to show the "whole beauty" of a male body.
Sorry for this "wall of words" but that's bothering me for so long now... - 9 years ago

It's just weird that some romances have very fleshed out sex scenes and some don't as if they're secondary and less important choices.
Ora that if you choose to have casual sex with someone you can't romance them anymore, that's not how life works, that feels like an almost moralistic choice.
I played sisRyder and romanced Reyes. The flirting was awesome, but after finisheing his quest there was nothing!
Even in the end of the game there was nothing but a wink! WTF?!
The flirt options are awesome for all romances I have seen so far, but the longterm relationships suck.
It's really disappointing when your LI does not even have something new to say in 20 hours of gameplay and lots of new achievements.
I guess in Andromeda you should flirt with everyone and not romance someone seriously -.- - 9 years ago
Hello,
(first: sorry for my english)
call me superficial, but .... I want a handsome man! ๐
I want to be the heroine with a good looking man by my side. I want to PLAY a movie ... I suppose a lot of us have this reason to play a game like Mass Effect: It's not enough for us to look to a movie, we want to be part of it, to decide and to be the hero. Some of us want to be the tragic hero, some of us want a happy end. But: We want to have a decision. And in the movies the heroes are NOT ugly like hell. Not the heroine and not the smart hero by her side! ๐
My "personal" problems with Liam:
Sorry, to sound a bit exaggerated, but isn't it a bit .... hmmm that the black Crew member behave like a Teenager-Ghetto boy? Really? In 2100? Shouln'd we push this (a bit racist) stereotypes apard? Next problem I have with Liam: WHY this little idiot interfere all the time in the Diplomatic relationship with the angara? Sutch a childish and incredible stupid idea to undress and insult with Jaal .... kindergarten! And than he send me a mail that he try to build up relationship with other angarians. Jesus helps me ..... I was really angry when I got this mail.
I want to show my visual problem with the love interest for females
Liam, Reeves and Jaal (Liams nose look like a zucchini!), the "heroes" for the Ladies looks like this:
Good looking & interesting men from successful films / series / andsoon looks like this:
YOU SEE THE DIFFERENCE? ๐
PS. Shemar Moore is soooo hot! ๐คญ
PS2: I liked Anomen, Zevran, Alistair, Anders, Fenris, Kaidan (was great), Garrus, Thane, Cullen (still my favorite!), Blackwall, Dorian was sooooooo great (ok, not for the female hehehe). You see: I don't have high requierements. But the men here in MEA are incredible, horrible! SAM is my "love interest". A KI is the sexiest man on board.
I absolutely agree with your post!
For femShep and femRyder you almost alwys get the Aliens but hardly any human whilst the maleShep and maleRyder get all the human girls...WTF?!
I don't get it and it makes me mad. Sure Garrus is my favorite although he is an alien...but well in ME2 I get a headbutt and in ME3 I get strange scenes with him still wearing his armor in bed...I mean seriously BioWare? You could have given him at least some casual clothings if you don't want to show the alien naked.
And now they show the alien naked, but the problem is still the same.As cute as I find the romance with Jaal I am really disappointed with the romances at all in Andromeda.
Flirting is awesome but anything further than this is just not really existent and not at all satisfying or worth the effort. - Anonymous9 years ago
Liam and Reyes both look very swxy to me. Everyone has their own opinion on what looks good and what doesn't. I personally have no issue in how they look, at all.
Just how poor the romances are.
The images you posted, only one or two of them really hold any appearance appeal to me at all. So yeah. Everyones sexy looking guy is very different. Hard to meet all requirements for that as they vary so much.
A good story and good romance though, thats somewhat easier to meet requirements for.
One of the things about Liam's that I think is bugging me so much was his complete lack of response when Sara was 'killed by SAM' to get out of the prison. The fact that at the time, he was there watching her die, seeing them have problems bringing her back and had no reaction to it what so ever. Yet previously in a conversation/banter with Peebee it was established that Liam takes it on himself to always be close to the Pathfinder, to protect them, yet there he was helpless to do anything on his watch to prevent it and he didnโt have a reaction to that?!
Even later on the ship when he does - very briefly mention it, he jokes and laughs it off with a hey you should probably stop dying.
And thats it?!
It was the perfect chance for a cute romance scene and frankly probably the main one that romance was lacking. He should have pulled her aside, kissed, hugged, mentioned how worried he was or something. It would have been a touching moment, something sorely lacking throughout Liam's romance.
As much as sex scenes are nice, I don't need one for the romance to be a good romance. What there does need to be is signs of caring. Intimate or heated or both moments. Liam really got none of that. It was almost as if his entire romance, save for a couple of very short conversations, was off-screen.
Liam romance break-down.
Flirt.
Awkward flirt.
Possible one night stand (which could lead to more). This scene had a kiss, the sex was off-screen. However the whole thing was interrupt only.
With no interrupt, all they do is touch foreheads.
Then you get nothing, nothing for ages.
Then Aya. He sends you off to scan stuff, after which they can have a 'date' but this supposed date is - yep you guessed it, off-screen. So you run around scanning for him, call it a date and it's done.
Then nothing, nothing, nothing.
All of a sudden back on Eos at the football game, he askes about getting serious, ending it or going on with no strings. So here I am, not having taken the interrupt. Having had one OFF SCREEN date with the guy. No kisses. Nothing and suddenly, he wants to get serious. Serious about what exactly?? At this point you can choose to go be alone with him - which is once again OFF SCREEN.
Then more nothing. Nothing. Nothing. The SAM death thing, that was also more nothing.
Final 'date' on Eos and omg finally something that was actually half way decent. Ages after getting serious theres even finally an on screen kiss...
End game. One more kiss. At which point Liam jokes about Marriage. He eblaborates on this a little further with the final conversation, to which Ryder barely responds, which is mostly imo a brush off. And thats a wrap folks. Usually people at least say I love you, before considering marriage. ๐ค๐ค๐ค
Where is the intimacy, the romance, the at least slightly sexy kisses before discussing getting serious? You know, the build-up. Apparently all off-screen, cause we didn't get any.

I guess thats not only a problem with the Liam romance but of all romances or even relationships/friendships
I finshed my second playthrough and had different romances and flirts and with all of them I was disappointed that there are so many moments I expect them to comment on something, but nothing. I mean Ryder is always almost dying or really dying or just doing stupid or badass things and they say nothing about it...no worries when he/she gets hurt or whatsoever.
In a game with such an amount of playtime it's just disappointed to just have 3-5 romantic moments or flirts.
Especially after the marketing was all on the "best romances ever" "Bangdromeda" and stuff like that...
Just disappointing โน๏ธ - 9 years ago
I have to ask, please:
Are the romances for males / straight and males / homosexuell and female / homosexuell better? It's a serious question, I really don't know it ...
About the appearance of the characters, to be honest ... they are ALL ugly, for me. Yes, the females, too. Even the Turians have strange faces ... "stone-washed" somehow.
Sorry, but I played Dragon Age: Inquisition before and I can't understand HOW they could have sutch unreal faces now in MEA ..... years later and DA:I is still so mutch better .... for my personal taste / opinion.
Here a dialoge with Dorian, my favorite buddy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZtBT1mtBhLY . Not the best Video and example, I'm sorry. Few mods inside. And the voices are so mutch .... more real! In German they are brilliant, I don't know how they have been in English. In MEA the voices are ... ok .... they don't impress me.
I mean, look at this picture:

I don't know about the f/f romances. I don't tend to do these, someone else maybe able to answer them. Except from my hubby who did DA:Is and they weren't great (Sera or Josephine was the only options there).
Straight males, right off the bat always get it better. Cassandra in DA:I had one of the best on screen sex scenes in the game. Again in Andromeda, Cora has the best sex scene and she is a human female.
They automatically get more options - Vetra, Cora, Peebee for a start, three SQUAD mate options. Then 2 side romance options (The reporter and an Angara) - thats 5 options compaired to straight females who get 3 options (Reyes, Liam and Jaal) and gay males who get 2. F/F even get 4, peebee, suvi, vetra, keri.
Now Jaal is a decent romance, but again he is an alien, not everyone is into naked alien butts, Liam and Reyes romances are both seriously lacking. Liam's just lacks romance period and Reyes is like its incomplete.
In the original trilogy, Jack, Miranda, Ashley, Liara, Tali for straight males - thats the ones I can remember, all perfectly viable, all carry over, none of them cheat and all can be kept alive. - three of them are human females.
Straight females got - Kaidan, Garrus, Thane (dies, can't be stopped), Jacob (cheats and runs off with said chick, also can not be stopped ), leaving with 2 viable options across the trilogy only, one of those alien.
The difference between what options straight males get, compaired to the options straight females get is huge. All we are really asking for is at least one human male option that has all the trimmings of a good romance. We don't expect to get as much options as straight males, which make up the bulk of players, but one decent human male romance choice at least would be nice.

I guess in Andromeda you should flirt with everyone and not romance someone seriously -.-Seems like it, which (I know I keep making this comparison) pales in comparison to Dragon Age Inquisition. There, the relationships actually develope. There's hiccups, there's growth, dialogue during the game that reminds you this relationship is a thing... Hell, you could ask Iron Bull for some sugar whenever you wanted to and while you don't see anything, its great for immersion (and who doesn't like a casual buttslap from your mate anyway!)
In Andromeda...well... you get reminded you're a thing only during specific cutscenes. Then you're done. Barely any commentary. Some random dialogue you can't even follow up with from your team mates and you're done. It doesn't make sense to me... DA:I is a Bioware game. Different devs and writers, sure, but you mean to tell me they learned nothing from that game? Absolutely no consistency within Bioware? Come on now.
I guess when Liam turned down BroRyder early on in the game it was really just a testament of the "HAHAHA NOPE" we should expect from Bioware and their empty promises. Which sucks. Been a fan of them for a bit, and I still find ME:A fun to play with, but the RPG element is what sells me the most, and I feel that's the biggest loss to this title.

In the notes of whats coming up for Andromeda, improvements for the gay male romances was one of the things listed.
Seriously hoping sometime after they also improve the straight female options.

Flirting is awesome but anything further than this is just not really existent and not at all satisfying or worth the effort.Garrus is a very nice romance. I love Garrus. And come on, why are you complaining? You get a sweet, deep and romantic headbutt in ME2 and it's manly to wear armor in bed, not to say "hot" - just think of the poor boys, they have to look at a genetically enhanced Barbie Doll in lingerie or get their uniform smudged all over from Jacks makeup. No thank you, that's disgusting! Almost as digusting as this single kiss (!) you have to share with Thane in his romance. Soooooo much action, almost unbearable!
๐
Although I hate ME3 I think BW did a great job with the tango. I love it. And I also love Jaal - I like his "personality" so I live with the fakt that - again - he's an "alien". It would have been nice to get something like that plus a more "humanoid" body. Or have an appropriate romance with our "humanoids". Liam, Reyes.
And while we at it, a bit more interactions in general, a "renegade" kiss interrupt, some free time in your luxurious but useless Pathfinder quarter, an evening in one of the many bars, or just a stroll around the marked on Aya. Much more than just some "romance" lines and that's all. Always feels so "forced". Maybe there shouldn't be any romances at all, so nobody has a reason to complain about bad romances or unfair and unbalanced treadment. Although I would miss it I could live with it. And no, I can't just pretend there are no romances or avoid them - as long as I have the opportunity to hit a "flirt" button I will... I am not that strong to restrain myself... even though I know I will be deeply disappointed in the end. - 9 years ago

To be honest: DA:I was a great success for me (personal opinion). So I can't say that Bioware is always breaking his promisses. And Mass Effect 1 to 3 have been great, too. Ok, the end of ME3 .... THERE WAS NO END!!! IT'S NOT EXISTING! ๐ฌ ๐
I wasn't hoping for a lot in MEA, only for ONE (two?) "average" romances for females. I was sure the males would get 4 or 5 great options.
Have you seen what plans for the next DLC / Patch they have? "Making the male / straight romance better and give the male Ryder more romance options." Hehehehe Great isn't it. ๐ Like a hit into the face of alle female players. โน๏ธ
Biowares plans for the next months - sorry in german: http://www.playm.de/2017/04/mass-effect-andromeda-update-plan-der-naechsten-monate-enthuellt-neuer-patch-am-donnerstag-339846/

Get this one. Liam right there when SAM stops Sara's heart -- zero reaction!
He makes a tiny joke / comment about it after the fact and thats it.
So much for Mr. Freakout. Doesn't even care the girl he likes is dying.
Right? Or Jaal being right there with a romanced Sara and before she dies, he's all "It's been a pleasure". Seriously?

The best cutscenes are for the Cora and Peebee romance. Cora is straight and although Peebee counts as bi BW used the same scenario for both gender - and well, works great for males but looks awkward and silly for females (and honestly, who could have foreseen that? Oh well...).
Jaal is nice, won't complain too much because it actually IS so much better than we females normally get as "hot romance cutscene".
About the "ugly" issue. Beauty lies in the eye of the beholder and I can live with the fact that there aren't any top models around. I prefer a good story over some "beautiful" but otherwise bland characters. But sadly we don't get a good story for Liam or Reyes.
About the voices. Actually I love my femRyder VA. I was a bit worried about it because I love how Jennifer Hales makes the femShep so "alive". FemRyder actually did a very good job, too. Also not much to complain about the others although I have my problems with Suvi - I'm wating for the moment that the faithful scientist finally transform into a rough and tough Cait...
Don't know much about the german version. I started it (I always give it a try, maybe some day... there should always be hope...), cringed. Jumped to the original version and never looked back.
