Update: Curiously while it failed before, I can now run the game when forcing to the integrated GPU. I am unclear why it didn't work before w/ the same error. However it seems like this may be rooted in a hardware failure.
I decided to play something else and it started throwing up (very different) errors, so I tried disabling Nvidia drivers again and both the other game and MEA start; sluggish obviously but no more crash.
