Why? Because everyone picked their own ending. Rather you liked any of the options or not, they were different from one another and not everyone picked the same one. What is 'canon' to you may not be the same for me.
I actually think they did a pretty good job with the way they got around this for Andromeda. You left before that choice was made so now everyone has their own reality that they left behind but it doesn't effect the current game. It was a good way of getting around the fact that everyone didn't get the same ending for the trilogy.
As for Mass Effect 4, I don't see it as a possibility for the exact reason that the ME3 ending wasn't a part of Andromeda. Too many varied options, there is no way to pick up from that point to where it makes sense for everyone no matter what they decided.
Rather you like the story of Andromeda or not, it was the most logical way to continue the series. Shepard and the trilogy are over, it was a great run but every great thing has to eventually end. As much as I loved the Mass Effect Trilogy, it's time to move on.
Yup agreed, some 10-15 years ago when they planned the ME storyboard, it was meant for a trilogy, when it became a wild success in ME2, they should have re-visited the storyboard and made some changes to the ME3 ending, so that it doesnt close off the entire series with 3 very divergent endings that can then branch off to best case, normal or worst case outcome within the bracket. Then a 4th option that the reapers won and the cycle continues. They simply cant come back from this. If they decide an ending some fans will be pissed if their ending is not selected. All they can do now is make life in a new galaxy and ignore the past, so they have little news that they cant communicate with the milky way via QEC etc... (Which doesnt make sense unless the worst case situations are assumed. )
There is "no ending" in Mass Effect 3. Till the Extendet Cut there are a few possible endings. And till they put in this "breathing chest" of Shepard at one of the endings, it could be everything. They can pick whatever ending they want: Destroying the MilkyWay, make a Human-Mechanic MilkyWay. Or:
Shepard saved the MilkyWay, was rescued, EVI was somehow redone (by a backup), the Portals are fixed. Everywhere is peace and Happiness. You see a shower, somebody is under the shower (remember Dallas 😃 ), than you see XXX [love-interest] enter the bathroom: "Sweetheart, you have an important call. It's Admiral Hackett .... the Galaxy is in trouble again. Hurry up!"
And your Shepard leaving the shower. Sighting. :-)

Never got this "canon" thing.
The story doesn't have to be about Shepherd.. but about the events that occurred. For me, the names of characters aren't instrumental in the flow of the game or any follow ons.
Just the idea of what the game is.. that's all that matters.
For example Civ 1-6.. it's all the same game.. just slightly different ways of playing it, same with FF series or Fifa.. you're just playing football all the time..
Mass Effect is just a series of intertwined stories. And it's the interaction with those stories that makes the game fun. (for me imho etc etc) Which is why I like even the most basic interactions the Angry Woman.. the Confused anagarons.. and so on. Even the most minor mission can have huge entertainment factoring into it.. You might perhaps in ME:5 or 6 if ever they come into being.. meet the great grand daughter of Sloan Kelly.. or of the Charlton.. Or Dunn.. Or someone from the earlier series..
It's like the whole Star Trek thing.. oh they switched timelines.. oh how terrible that is, I hate star trek now etc etc.. doesn't bother me one bit.. I like the old Star Trek, I like the new.. that someone switched timelines only makes it more interesting, not less so. All this hang up hate about what is or isn't Canon.. it's completely pointless.
I'm glad they made new characters from a fresh bloodline.. because the story of andromeda does stem from the story of the original series. You just can't import your character to it.. because they've gone in a different direction.

Whilst I do think your version is better and given a choice I would buy a game with this ending, the actual fact is that yours is one of 10 possible ending. You chose destroy. ending and probably have enough war assets so shepard survived(and hoped that there is a shower scene lol) What if another fan chose synthesis and shepard's dead and milkyway folks are now these quasi organic/synth hybrid? Or another who chose control and Shepard's now a super reaper galactic policeman?
Just saying if I am siting on the bioware seat and I am the one in charge of the next ME game, it would take a lot of guts and political will to pull off a ME4, telling all fans to ignore the previous 9 endings and focus on one that Bioware now thinks is the actual ending. They cant even do a Q&A thing at the start to find out which ending you chose so that they can customise the game accordingly, as the endings are too divergent. It's like they will have to do at least 3 totally new games rather than 1. So the easy way out was to create andromeda...

See Dragon Age: They made Dragon Age: Inqusisition with ONE possible ending. They just have choosen one ending with a little bit "cosmetic chances depeding on your decisions in the further two parts". Like: Is Alistair king or Warden. 😉
Why should they not do the same with Mass Effect?

Well I played all 3 dragon age games, I vaguely remembered the first one was good, the second one wasnt, DAI was ok. I cant even remember the story as it didnt attract me as much as ME. I think they changed the protagonist, the 3rd one as well. I can hardly remember the characters( with the exception of morigan cause shes so hot with claudia black's voice... man... Apologies I digress...) As much as some fans loved dragon age, for me, in my personal scale of games, it's not there at the top with the ME trilogy. If you wish to create a game like Dragon age, different protagonist, a little disjointed, am sure some would like that. I wont. To me that would have devastated the ME legacy more than MEA would lol. For me when people mention gotham, I think of batman, when people mentioned ME I think of Shepard, Robin will never replace batman, even if he calls himself nightwing and gets a darker costume. Calling a show gotham and I get only robin running around saying "Holy Moly" being a nice boy just doesnt really do it for me... That's just my opinion, feel free to disagree but that's how I feel.

Aw C"mon Vlad! If they made a Canon ending where Shep defied Catalyst and used the Crucible like the Death Star in Return of the Jedi, and then the war rages on for years until an eventual victory I think at least 90% of ME fans would happily buy into it, as long as they got it as an option to choose in their own games. Maybe a few die hard Control or Synthesis people, but mostly those endings suck.💔
All Bioware would have to do would be to take the "lose" ending and add a bit between Catalyst getting huffy and Liara's message. Like Shep pops open a power box thing on the wall, finds the big red button, and has a dialogue choice. Paragon Shep goes with "sorry, but you brought this on yourselves" or something.😇 Renegade Shep does the ME version of the Emperor's Death Star victory monologue, "prepare to witness the power of this fully armed and operational battle station, your friends will die, your fleet will be destroyed, and soon this pitiful harvest will be at its end, etc."👿😃 Hopefully we get to see Reaper ships getting blown apart, and if we have a high readiness/force total, we get to see any surviving friends just taking apart groups of Reaper ground forces.:eahigh_file: Then you can let the LIara's message bit play out, but at the end rotate the view 180 degrees and show a city and people possibly the Storyteller and child. Then Shep can narrate the ending "the war was long and brutal but after the main Reaper forces at Earth and Palaven were destroyed....". YAY! Everyone's Happy!🥳
