Tragedies aren't "good", they aren't "artistic", or any of that. They just plain s*ck. If I want a tragedy, I have real-life for that. I don't need it in my fantasy shows also. 😞

@Dvveebo Geez, you're one of those weird, chaotic people who just loves a "good tragedy", aren't you? Whatever happened to a good, old-fashioned happy ending?

I have to disagree with you on some of this, as SOME stories are best ended on tragic or not a happy ending to make a point and to fit in with the rest of the story. To my mind, the endings of Cyberpunk 2077 are mostly kinda tragic, sad, or kinda disheartening, BUT they fit the story arc. They do offer one kinda "good" ending, but most aren't in any way "good", but they are well written and good story telling endings. The issue I have with ME3 endings are they go against the feel of the rest of the game, overcoming all odds to succeed, AND THEY BREAK LORE OF THE GAME. Also the pure bs red/blue/green endings, instead of the promised radically different INDIVIDUAL endings....
Personally, I MUCH prefer a happy or "good" ending but can appreciate a tragic ending sometimes, as long as it keeps with the rest of the story feel.

I completely agree with you here.
Anyone who saw through this story, a story in which sentient machines wiped out hundreds of millions of living beings and expected a "happily ever after ending," paid no attention to the story.

I'll give you some of that. Maybe it's just a personal pet-peeve of mine. I just hate tragedies.
The ending where... (spoilers?) someone... dies doesn't bother me very much.
The main issue I had is very much like what you said. Look at it with my thoughts throughout the series. ME1 was good. Great story, nice combat, lots of options. When ME2 came out and I saw a lot of the choices I made in ME1 carried over and resulted in how ME2 ended, I thought that was awesome!
Then, when I heard ME3 was coming out to end the reaper threat once-and-for-all... I was ecstatic! Think about it... ALL the choices in ME1, ALL the choices in ME2, ALL the choices in ME3, all culminating in one GLORIOUS custom ending... I simply couldn't wait!
Then, we get to the ending of ME3, and it was basically choose curtain 1, 2, or 3... and they were all identical. (mostly) That meant ALL the choices in 1, 2, and 3, made absolutely no difference at all in the ending. So, why did I even play them? Why should I even bother playing them again if they have no effect on the ending?
Sure, the game is a tragedy, mainly because so many died. That's the conflict. A story isn't good without conflict of some sort. Having the PC live at the end would be nice, but its acceptable.
But the 100% identical endings isn't. - mcsupersport4 years agoHero+
LOL, the sarcasm is thick with this one....
Yeah, hundreds of millions die...and you can show that so the endings aren't all sunshine and roses...BUT
1) You may have gotten the Geth and Quarian to be allies again, letting them work together to a better future....but in Red ending, NOPE the Geth had to die because they said so....you do remember Geth are software, and a red energy wave shouldn't be able to wipe out only certain software and not all software, and Geth could live in a minor computer such as a suit environmental processor meaning fairly low CPU capacity.
2) Hey, lets look at Green....in some fashion, a human is able to be used as a template to transform ALL living things in the ENTIRE Milky Way Galaxy into some hybrid bio-synthetic lifeform.....because human DNA is so special it can even effect Turian and Quarian DNA properly, let alone all the billions of lifeforms across billions of planets in the MW Galaxy. Hey, and in the Green wave it can be done in the blink of an eye.
3) Yeah, millions die, but in ME1, you overcame the impossible to stop the Reapers and Saren, in ME2 you overcame the impossible to stop the Collectors and save your crew, in ME3....you need a giant space microphone to access a portion of the Citidel that NO ONE KNEW EXISTED, but someone created a giant space microphone to jack into it, so that awesome things could be done by Human DNA. IF the Citadel controls the Reapers...wouldn't it make more sense to just blow the fluffer up???
To my mind, the Red Blue Green endings actually take away from the impact of Billions dead in the war, and everything wraps up in cutscenes and a sad procession at the Normandy Wall. You feel the loss when you are on the main planets fighting, but you really don't see it after due to the way everything ended.

Yes, they could have done that, and other stuff, if that would be a better ending for the majority of the people remains unknown.
imho anything than a full blown happy ending would have been disappointing for most people that complained about the ending in the first place.
For me, full blown happy end would not be sufficient for this story.
It is all purely subjective. 😉
