Playing on a console too and no problem at all with jump/hover.
We need to jump between platforms to reach many things, like hidden caches. I think it is part of the challenges of the game.

I played the game on PC and tried both controllers and mouse + keyboard. I thought the game was overall easier to control with a mouse and keyboard, which offer more precision, but I never had issues with jumping on either input method. The biggest issues for me with a controller were aiming (I'm used to the precision of a mouse) and scanning (having to move your thumb off the right stick to scan an object is counter-intuitive).
I can understand that fast-paced games with jumping, hovering, rolling, and whatnot can be difficult for some players. There have been many advancements with regards to accessibility features in games in the past few years, but unfortunately I'm not aware of anything that will help with this particular issue.
I don't think he had an issue with jumping, but more an issue with the platformer style of play in the Remanent Vaults where you have to jump from one pylon or platform to another and if you miss you die. To him it seems to be a game style preference, which I can kinda understand, but can't agree with him on. Now mind you it is his preference, but I can see the value of the platformer mechanic to add difficulty and puzzles to the game. Once I spent time with the game, it wasn't hard and was just another puzzle to do, and his argument can be used against just about any element....well if you fail just reload a save so why have it there.....
Though as a yeah, game logic note: you can fall out of the sky pretty much from lower orbit, you can use "gravity wells" to traverse levels, but if you are in first Vault, and jump off the edge to what you can physically see below, it kills you.....cause you ain't supposed to go that way.....game logic.....
The jump/hover was a logical evolution
In me3 you had the turian jumpjet MPcaracter
And you could biotic charge all over the map
It might get some getting used to ....
But it's a sci-fi space exploration RPG
What's sci-fi without jetpacks?
By not playing it you don't get to play a fairly enjoyable game (certainly until the salarian-arc is saved)

My personal experience/thoughts to jumping in games.
I have issues if I can't jump in a game, Dragon age, Kotor and the early Mass Effect series are challenging for me with lack jumping. Jumping adds to the immersive of the world for me, while jumping seems such simple movement system how can it add anything to the game? It add a dash of reality to the game, I also feel less limited in the world or to my character. I love the verticality of games and jumping up and down and puzzle jumps are great, I have a great time. Titanfall is another level when it comes to jumping scaling running I love it and while Andromeda is not on the same scale as Titanfall its really good jumping mechanic.
Jumping is simplistic but adds so much to a game.
