Launcher works fine but can't start any of the three games (WIN10)

The main launcher works just fine, but if I try to start any of the three games, the screens cut to black, then after a few seconds I'm sent back to the selection screen of the main launcher.

Hey everyone, we've been seeing a few different causes for this situation. The majority in this particular thread appear to be due to an issue we've passed along to the game team that involves non-standard characters in either the Windows username or file structure (i.e. a folder name where the game or save files are located).

If your Windows username or any related folders use non-standard characters, updating those may be a temporary workaround. Alternatively, the steps outlined in this post have helped a number of folks out as well.

If those steps don't help out and/or you don't have any non-standard characters in use on your system, please head over to this thread so we can try some additional troubleshooting.

I'll be closing the current thread so we can keep troubleshooting efforts for this issue in one place going forwards, thanks.

  • I have the same issue.

I deactivated both my antivirus and Windows Defender firewall to test, and none of the games run.

My account name does indeed have "é" in it. However, I am not so desperate as to change it, or create a second account on my computer to play the game.

I expect EA/Bioware to do what is necessary to be inclusive of their global community, or I will have no choice but to return the 2 games I gifted and the one I bought for myself.

Involving the Origin account on a Steam purchase is already very convoluted. I hope the experience can rapidly be made painless. Thank you.

  • I had this problem as well. It would sit there for a bit, then I'd get the cover image for ME1 and it would still just sit there with audio in the background.

For some reason, If I alt+tab, it switches to the game window and closes the launcher lol. Maybe that will work for you, too.

Amazing how something as integral to playing a game as LAUNCHING it could be overlooked prior to release.

@DistortedShapes This worked for me and I don't even have any unusual characters in my username or profile path. 🤷‍♂️

@DistortedShapes Thank you very much! I tried every solution for the last 4 hours and nothing helped. Even new user accounts didn't help. Yours finally made the MELE work!

Here are my conclusions, maybe this will help someone ! I think the game is trying to create a save file in the Documents folder, unfortunately I had moved this folder to a folder named with special characters (é and è, salut les francais). So I moved my Documents folder to a folder without accents and it works ! So don't just check the special characters in your windows username, but the entire path to the Documents folder!

Also try to turn on this:

Start > Control Panel > Region > "Administrative Tools" tab > click the "Change Locale" button.
Here you have the option : "Beta: Use Unicode UTF-8 for worldwide language support".

Then reboot and try starting the games

Thanks, it worked ! I also had a "é" and a "è" in my name. I had changed the name of my Microsoft account to remove those characters but it did not work until I activated that option in the control panel.

    Bon jeu les français !

Same. I was thinking about two 60 euro games to buy this month. I chose this one. I don't want to go the length to make the game launch, and I won't stand for a 60 euro title screen. I'm ready to refund and switch to the other game if not resolved quickly.
