Low FPS on Mass Effect 2 despite good specs?!

I've just bought mass effect 2 and experiencing quite low fps even when not running at full resolution. My specs: Intel core i7 2.50 GHz, GeForce gtx 860M, 16gb memory and running on windows 8.1. The game should be running a dream with these specs but FPS remains around 20-28. Any help?

install latest driver as custom and only install the display and HDMI audio drive, untick everything else even catalyst control center.

If you run the game in Origin, make sure you disable the "Origin in-game overlay". It reduces framerates in several games.
