Mass Effect 1 will not start on Windows 10

I have tried every fix I can find on-line and I still can't get anything to fully work.  First System Specs

CPU: Ryzen 5-1600

Graphics: XFX RX-480 8GB using Radeon 18.2.1 driver

Memory: 16GB DDR4-3200

HDD: WD Blue 500 GB M.2

HDD2: WD Blue 2TB mechanical

So to begin my tale, I had an EVGA GTX 1060 6GB and the game ran fine. I had a friend in need of a short graphics card so I traded for his XFX RX-480.  Installed the card and Mass Effect would not launch.  (Compatibility mode for XP SP3 and Administrator.)  Had some other issues so I Did a clean wipe of the OS, reinstalled and ME launched and ran fine for the 4+ hours I played after I first installed the game.  Now, it has decided to no longer fully launch.  I get the popup for admin, Origin launches and as soon as Origin launches it stops.  Trying to launch from orgin only causes a screen flicker.  ME 2, 3 and Andromeda all work. Even KOTOR, KOTOR 2 and Jade Empire work. I have turned off Origin in game and cloud saves, same thing.  Tried uninstall and reinstall, same thing, tried fix, same thing. The date of the ME binary is July 9th 2015

  • Hi Malsell,

This seems rather odd, When you launch me1 does the program executable stay in memory when it fails to run? Also have you tried older driver versions for your graphics card? It sounds like an incompatibility issue to me. I'm not well versed in the latest amd hardware, Back when I used an Athlon cpu some games that worked fine on intel cpu's just refused to run at all. Also Do you have the latest build of windows 10 (1709 os build 16299.248)? to check that type winver in the search box.

other than that reinstall direct x 9 and check its working properly. Also go in to me1's config program and try different settings see if that makes a difference.

I moved your post to the Mass Effect thread.

First Disable the compatibility mode and the Administrator mode > test.

If that don't works, create a DxDiag in text file format, also go to your Reliability monitor (Press the windows key and "R" at the same time and copy or type "perfmon /rel" (without the quotes) in > ENTER and look if it has ME1 entries.

If yes double click at the last one, copy it to the clipboard, (Bottom left corner) save it to a text file and load it up together with the DxDiag.

You can do that with the "choose file" button at the bottom right corner of the reply window.

Tried to disable each and both compatibility mode and administrator mode..no love

checked performon, nothing for ME1.  Only errors from my HP wireless printer.

    Attached is DxDiag

I keep windows updated and this is the same driver I installed before I installed the game.  I will try to reinstall DX9, but it is working fine in other games.
