Mass Effect 1 won't launch on Windows 8 Pro 64 bit

Game- Mass Effect

Media- Digital Download via Gamersgate

System Details:

Windows 8 Pro- 64 bit

AMD A6-4400M APU (2.7 GHz) with Radeon HD 7520G graphics

4 GB RAM

Video driver version- 8.982.10.6000

AMD High Defition Audio Device (driver 8.0.0.8813)

DirectX 11

Here's the issue: I try to load up the game, it gets to the Launcher Application screen fine, but when I press play, and nothing loads. The little blue circle goes around for about 3 seconds and then stops. Mass Effect never shows up in Task Manager either.

Here are the solutions I've tried (basically everything else available on the forums):

Run the game, masseffect.exe, masseffectlauncher.exe, Origin in compatability mode and as Administrator

Disable cloud storage

Disable UAC

Contact EA support

Reinstall the game

Repair install through Origin

Patch 1.02

Load the program in safe mode

The EA support team said that the game just isn't compatable with Windows 8, but I know there are people here that have gotten it to work. Unfortunately, their posted fixes aren't working for me. Any thoughts?

Hey, I still have the same problem running 8.1 and have done everything possible to try and fix this. Did you manage to get through?

I am also having the same problem ☹️  Just bought the game, was looking to play all night, but It just won't launch...So frustrating

  • Just to let you know:

I've just had a conversation with an ea customer support attendee, and he confirmed that this is a "Known issue" and they're working on it, it seems to be an error with a bunch of Mass Effect 1 key codes they are trying to solve atm. He also let me know they expect to have it solved in 24h, and that i would only have to try starting the game after that time.

Will let you know if this is true and finally they come up with a solution. Hope it does.

    Hi,

Any news from this issue? I'm having the exact same problem ☹️

Obviously, it has taken longer than 24 hours to fix, considering I have the exact same issue and have reason to believe it has to do with the serial code. Apparently, not all game advisors are aware of this issue, as the one I was on the phone with for 40 minutes yesterday never mentioned it. She did give me a new serial code but that one didn't work either.

For me, after putting the Launcher.exe in the right place and patching, I get a pop up to put in a serial code, but it has a wrong one pre-loaded. It will not except any code I put in, or the one it has pre-loaded. I hope this gets fixed soon. I bought the game Cyber Monday, downloaded it and installed it by Tuesday night, Wednesday morning I called, downloaded and installed again by Thursday night and am still disappointed. I will contact the advisors again tomorrow, and hopefully be bumped up to a Specialist who might be able to help me. I will post if I have any success.

    I am also running a Windows 8 64-bit.

Edit: It turns out, they seem to have given me an old wonky version of the game. They have given me a different one and I am downloading and installing now. I will update if this fixes the issue (it should). I encourage everyone to call it in, they called me back after 30 secs and were very invested in fixing the issue.

I talked with an advisor yesterday, I told him I tried everything listed on this thread. He gave me a new product activation code, and after uninstalling, donwloading and installing the game again through Origin it just worked fine.
