Mass Effect 2 - Physx error

I purchased the Mass Effect 2 game on disk from Half Price Books.  After installing, when I attempt to launch the game, I get an error that says, "Failed to initialize the physics system.  Please ensure you have an updated version of the PhysX System Software installed."

Could you please walk me through fixing this issue.

  • I don't know exactly where the physx setup can be found on the disc.So do not launch automatically your disc, but open it (right click and "open") and make a search on it with keywords "physx".

If you find the setup, launch it (after you uninstalled the version of physx you had before).

Another solution would be to, like the first one, uninstall physx from your computer, uninstall Mass Effect 2 and reinstall it.

To be clear, the issue seems to be that Mass Effect 2 is working with the version of physx provided in the disc, and not with the latest.

for me it worked to completely uninstall the NVIDIA PhysX from the windows programs and restart the game. It will automatically update with the right PhysX engine. It's a version problem between older games like ME2 and more recent ones, for me ME3 killed the engine, so whenever I want to play either of them I have to delete PhysX before and let it reinstall.

  • Thank you for your information Mussdas! I installed the legacy and driver and instantly was able to boot the game! No "uninstall and reinstall older versions" to play a game! Much appreciated!
