Mass Effect 2 won't start through steam

O.K. so I bought both games on steam and I want to play the first game before the second but it wont start and I have the hardware to run it. Am I missing some sort of step that needs to be taken first so something and if that is the case they should really tell you these things when you buy it. Any help to fix this will be appreciate and I thank you.
