Solved

Mass effect 3 - Dialogue and other sounds drowned out.

So just recently I installed mass effect 3 and decided to play again. However when I loaded my saved game I noticed the sound quality was poor and disoriented. I've tried numerous ways to fix this problem with EA live chat support, but nothing is yet to work. Now I'm being told to call their " advance help"  but the problem is it cost a fortune just to speak  with them over the phone. This is complete bull **** when I purchase a game I expect the game to be fully functional and not have to pay an extra fee just to get it work.

I had the same problem and it was caused by defective headphones or headphone extension cable (I know that sounds hard to believe). One thing you should try is to use a different set of headphones or use just the speakers to see if the issue goes away. My headphones seemed to work fine with Itunes, etc, but chaging to a different pair resolved the issue with ME sound. Strange but true...

  • Do you have a surround headset that maybe isn't properly configured? There's some headsets that need to be setup via software or a hardware button to enable surround sound. If not you won't hear center sounds and everything sounds distant.

I checked all my sound settings and everything is properly configured. I've even tried different head sets, or just plain speakers. I'm pretty sure its within the soundfiles..

Have you tried a repair install? Other than that I'm afraid it looks like it has something to do with your system since it worked at some point for you and if it were a general problem, more people would have it. Mass Effect is very sensitive to sound settings in Windows. If you have configured the speakers to be surround, it will use suround sound and if you only have a stereo setup you'll have the described problems with muted and distorted sounds

  • Could you describe what dialog sounds like? Not ambient voices, but dialog in a cutscene or with a dialog wheel.

If it really is the surround sound issue, as suggested, then you'll only hear echoes of the voices. This is because on a surround setup voices come through the front central speaker. If the game is outputting in surround sound when you have a stereo setup, you will barely hear the voices.

Could you post details about your speaker setup? (stereo or surround)

Got it working! Thanks all! For whatever reason the audio settings kept switching when mass effect opened.
