ME2 crashes after Intro / Windows 10

Hey everyone,

since I pre-ordered ME4, I wanted to play all previous ME games. Mass Effect 1 worked fine, but then I wanted to play ME2, which doesn't start. I tried almost every solution to get it going, but for some reason the game crashes every time, after the Intros ran and I press a button to get to the main menu.

I installed PhysX, I updated DX and I even tried various graphics drivers. Normally I use MSI Afterburner to display my temperatures an the FPS, but even if Afterburner is shut down, the game doesn't work. I installed ME2 from DVD and via Origin, nothing seems to help. Compatibility mode for Windows 8 doesn't work, either. I also tried it with the standard clocks of my i7 and my HD7970, but without any luck.

My system specs are:

Intel Core i7 4790k @ 4,6 Ghz

Asus Z97 Pro Gamer

4x 4GB Gskill RipJawsX DDR3-2133

Asus Radeon HD7970 Matrix Platinum @ 1250/1800 Mhz

250GB Samsung 850 Evo (for Windows and games)

Windows 10 Pro 64 + Anniversary Update

The funny thing is, that it kind of works on my secondary machine with Windows 8.1. The problem is, it looks terrible and stutters horribly, because of the graphics card, which is a HD3870X2.

It would be great if anyone, has another idea, how I can get Mass Effect 2, to work.

Try to repair the game. (in Origin > Game Library > right click ME2 > Repair)

If that don't works, make sure that Origin and the Game are completely closed.

Go to your ">drive<":\Program Files (x86)\Origin Games\Mass Effect 2\__Installer\vc\vc2005\redist" folder and run the "vcredist_x86.exe" > reboot > go back to the same folder and run the  "vcredist_x64.exe" > reboot > test.

If that don't helps, please report back.

I tried to reinstall and repair the game several times, actually. I updated VCRedist, DX and my graphics driver, but that dowsn't help. Everytime I start the game, I see the intro scenes and then the screen, wehere I have to push a button, as soon as I do that, the game crashes.

Funny thing is, I installed Windows 8.1 yesterday and Mass Effect 2 runs perfectly. But I really want to use DX12 within some of the newer games, but to be brutally honest, I want to play Forza Horizon 3, which doesn't work on 8.1, so I need Windows 10.

To make things easier, here is a list of things, I already tried:

    • Reinstall the game
    • Repair
    • Disable Cloud Sync
    • Disable Origin InGame
    • Updated graphics driver
    • Updated every other driver (such as chipset, etc)
    • Reinstalled Windows10 (with and without Annyversary)
    • Compatibility mode (Windows 7, 8)
    • Changed the name of the MEGame.exe too MassEffect2.exe (as mentioned in another thread)
    • Reduced graphic details and even resolution
    • Swapped my GPU with the one from my girlfriend (7970 -> 290X)
    • Swapped the GPU with one of the old ones I have lying around (9800GTX+ / GTX480)
    • Swapped out RAM

And a whole other things I can't remember right now. As mentioned, the game runs perfectly now, but not with Windows 10, so that's not really the best solution.

Did you reinstalled the 2005 VC++ run-times from Microsoft or the Packages that come with the game?

It is strange that the game don't runs on Win 10, but runs on 8.1.

A dual boot system would be a workaround. But it is of course a lot of effort for just one game.

I tried both methods to reinstall VCRedist. A dual boot would be a solution and it actually wouldn't be such a big effort, but whats bothering me about that is, that I can't install Windows XP, which would be a much better second system, because of some old games, which doesn't run on any NT6 based Windows. But there has to be some kind of solution, to get Mass Effect 2 running on my system, if Windows 10 is installed.

But you're right, it is kind of strange, that it works perfectly with Windows 8.1, but doesn't even start with Windows 10. If I remember correctly, I played Mass Effect2 on Windows 10, back when 10 was released. But some reason I often have such kind of luck with a Bioware game. First with Dragon Age II which was stuttering like hell on a system, which should have been able to play the game with the highest settings, then with Dragon Age Inquisition, which I had exactly 8 month, before I was able to play it (and no, the problem was my system), then with Mass Effect 3, which crashed severeal times during the game, sometimes at crucial points in the game. And now the problem with ME2. Maybe I'm just cursed, if it comes to Bioware games, but I really love them, so I just have to keep trying.

That is a lot of bad luck, but yes, the games are worth it.

Why can't you install Windows XP in dual boot?

I tried to install Windows XP once, but it didn't work as good as I hoped. At first I had no sound, then, when this was sorted out, I had trouble with my RAM, because of the 32-Bit Version. The main issue was, that I couldn't use more than 3,2 GB, which I knew before I installed it, but for some reason games like NFS Underground 2, wouldn't work properly. So I installed XP x64, which is the sadest excuse for an operating system I ever encountered. I had Bluesreens all over the system, The OS didn't accept some of the drivers, it crashed during the installation of a game, ingame it froze and even though it is/was a 64 Bit version, XP didn't recognize my 16Gb RAM.

Another issue is, that there aren't drivers for my system, espacially for my board. So I can't use USB 3.0 and the most annoying thing is, that not all HDD's  show up, except my SSD and the 640GB HDD I use for some of my games.

I also installed Vista once, but I can't find my DVD. I would like to install it again, but Microsoft refuses to send me another DVD, because I have the Enterprise edition, they told me, if I had a version, like the Ultimate or Home Premium, there wouldn't be a problem, but they have no Entprise DVD's left, so I have no cahnce to install Vista.

    But back to topic. ^^

I installed Windows 10 once again, this time via an upgrade of Windows 8.1. Mass Effect 2 launches now, and I can play it. But now ME3 crashes very often, so I think I install Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 in a dual boot. This should work and I might be able to use all the features I want within Windows 10 and play games like Mass Effect.

It's just a DX error, I think. Or an error with my graphics driver, but it's not that important. Mass Effect 2 runs perfectly now, so Im glad.

I had this error with ME3 once, back then the issue was solved, when I installed DX once again and downgraded my graphics driver. I hope, it's that simple, if not, ME3 will be played with Windows 8.1, where it works just fine.

Even if it doesn't work, I am able to play it, if I install it on my secondary system. I just have to change the graphics card from the HD3870X2 to the GTX480, i order to enjoy the game with the highest graphics settings.

Ok, lots of workarounds but the most important thing is that the games are running. Have fun Gaming!

  • I know this problem has been fixed but, to those take still have trouble, try to delete the last savefile that you made. for some reason mine was corrupted, so every time the game tries to find the to use for resume it crashes
