ME2 Legendary crashes during the New Game Intro

I installed Legendary in Steam over a week ago and played through ME1 with no problem, then I started ME2 completely fresh, no saves, no mods.

ME2 Legendary crashes every time I start a new game during the 10 minute+ intro, when Shepard is resurrected from deep space. It just goes back to the launcher.

I've tried Windows 8 compatibility mode, running as Admin, installing the latest nVidia driver, deleting the ME2 save game folder, turning off Cloud Save sync, renaming the exe to MassEffect2Launcher.exe, installing the latest VC Redist v15 32bit and 64bit, nothing works.

If I download someone else's save and load it up, it works fine. But I want to start the game fresh, not from level 30+.

DxDiag.txt is attached.

  • @SimCJ  Please try repairing the game in both Steam and Origin, just to be thorough.  For Steam, right-click on the game tile and select Properties > Local files > Verify integrity of game files.  For Origin, right-click on the game tile and select Repair.

If that doesn't help, please set exceptions in your antivirus for MassEffect2.exe as well as MassEffectLauncher.exe and Origin.exe.  If you only use Windows Defender, add exceptions in your Controlled Folder Access settings.

If that doesn't help either, please let me know whether you can start a new ME3 save—I'm curious whether the issue is something about ME2 or more general.

If and when you get tired of troubleshooting, I could send you a new ME2 save.  But there's no guarantee you wouldn't run into the same problem later when trying to save or load the game.

Verifying the game in Origin didn't work. I tried running the game but Origin could not find the game files, even after logging out and back into Origin.

I ran the Steam verification and then ran the game, it works now 🙂 It was a completely fresh install from 2 weeks ago on a good HDD so I have no idea what happened there.

    Thanks for you help
