After a while, it goes to the main screen and says "Redeem/Purchase Online Pass" at the portion that would normally state I am signed on. I cannot click on downloadable content, and if I click multiplayer, it brings up the pass again. Clicking the "redeem...pass" portion brings to me a screen where it tells me I need to get one.

I'm sorry you are having this issue with MP Online Access. I don't see where you mention which platform you are playing on.
In the event you are playing on a PS3, (which is the platform I play it on) , you may just have to check that your connection to PSN is active and just quit the game then re-login. Sometimes when PSN is doing maintenance, it signs-off players w/o notification and we are asked by EA server to re-download/purchase Online Access code in error.
Now, if you are playing in another platform,then I suggest that you do a search for the issue -under Help Center. Maybe it has been acknowledged before and the solution is in the database there.
