with most of my characters by mid play-through they usually windup with about 3 sets of armor, i outfit them depending on the situation. the team members i plan to bring, and the terrain i'm looking at, and what role i'm fitting into given my current team, vanguard, infiltrator, etc. however, if i'm going to be flipping between tech & biotic or combat profiles a lot that helius defender armor is the best fit.
Pathfinder looks the best in my opinion but its stats are just meh and i couldnt find it useful anywhere on insanity.
N7 for biotic thats for sure, you dont have any alternative for that class if you play pure biotic.
Anyway with some luck you can build a lvl3 N7 set on lvl10-11. But that forced me to rush for Havarl to get platinum and sell a bunch of other minerals to get credits for iridium from the kiosk on the tempest. I think i had the rest of the materials already by that time. Also scan the available planets (i think one or two of them has a satellite for a juicy 50 milky way points but not sure). Research points were a bit scarce at that point so i scanned almost everything in order to get them to lvl3 because i took the reconnaissance (hidden caches) first of the cryo pod perks.

Pathfinder looks good, but I don't want to be "Pink". I hate it, that I can't color everything ....

The Damage Reduction is not bad if you stack it with Kinetic mods. You can get up to about 90 points (which with other options for your build can bump you over 100 which is 50% damage incoming).

Pathfinder gear with Tech armor skill and one of the augments for 25% shields when you kill an enemy. Makes you extremely tanky. I cruised through insanity with it. My NG+ Im trying to make N7 but lacking in MW research points. The the cryo-pod bonus doesn't stack up over time so you only get 100 when you collect it.
