Re: How do I import my Mass Effect 1 character into Mass Effect 2, and 3?

On PC you have to open the configuration utility and manually locate the save folder. This step is not necessary in ME3.

If you version of Mass Effect 2 doesn't launch with a splash screen, then you have to locate the config utility manually. Locate the folder where Mass Effect is installed. Then go to Binaries and open 'MassEffect2Config'. There's a button on the left about save games. After clicking it, a button appears called 'copy Mass Effect 1 saves' that allows you to browse to the folder containing your save files. The folder is usually Documents - BioWare - Mass Effect - Save. Once you're there, simply click OK. There's no fancy message or anything, but it should be fine now.

When I open my Binaries folder there's nothing in it at all.  Is there a reason for this?

This forum really should be updated. If you run the configuration utility on mass effect two PC (part of the trilogy) it breaks something and the game will not load. As far as i can see there has been no real solution to this issue. If the config has been run, the game needs to be completely uninstalled and reinstalled in order to make it playable. Now I'm trying to find a way to manually copy over the save files, cause if i can't continue form the first game, im returning the game.

  • Thanks. 🙂 I can now enjoy playing with my work of art of a character. 🙂

    C:\Program Files (x86)\Origin Games\Mass Effect 2\Binaries

    Open Mass Effect config.

    Open the save games tab.

Click the "Copy Mass Effect 1 Save Games"-button.

Locate the Mass Effect 1 saves folder:

    C:\Users\[Your Username]\Documents\BioWare\Mass Effect\Save
This is the standard folder where your Mass Effect saves are.

    Click "OK".

Congrats! You just imported your saves!

I don't know about the Steam version of the game though. I prefer Steam for a lot of things, but Mass Effect is a game I'd play using Origin, not Steam.

Fred's answer is invaluable!  I have both boxed and new Origin Digital files on my system. I found the ME1 game folder, with old characters and it took more serching to find my most recent character. The newer characters are saved per level and date, (not name). I found ME2 using the regular windows file search. Clicking on it goes into game launch- BUT, right click for submenu, Config is in the drop down list. It opens the ME2 Conf utility, with the infamous Import Mass Effect One games. Then as Fred says, just say OK.

"Then go to Binaries and open 'MassEffect2Config'"

My "Binaries" folder is completelly empty!

I JUST COMPLETED ME1 AND I just want to be able to continue using my character...

(why does every program hate me when I try to do things that aren't 100% automatic?)

You know... it probably would help if it did have some sort of fancy message saying that it has completed copying the saves so we know that it worked...

Whenever I go into the Program Files (x86) and open the config utility, the config opens but there is no option to choose the games save files. It is titled the Bioware config utility and not the Mass Effect 2 config utility. Any clue as to why this is the case?

You're probably in the wrong binaries folder. You need the one in the installation folder, not the one in Documents.
