I found a fix. I followed all the steps and now have surround in ME1. Happy days!

Where it says Windows/WOW64 it actually means Windows/sysWOW64, but other than that its spot on.

Now to kill me some reapers!

I noticed that the BIOEngine.ini file also has a heading for [ISACTAudio.ISACTAudioDevice], which we used in the vanilla ME1 to get surround sound. Can anyone apply this tweak straight to the config file and see if that fixes it?

The config file is in Origin Games\Mass Effect Legendary Edition\Game\ME1\BioGame\Config

  • I tried just fixing the bioengine.ini like I did with the original ME1 but it didn't work. I had to do all the steps from the fix I found before I got surround. It seems the windows 10 files are part of the problem now.

I've tried this and while it does seem to enable audio from my rear speakers, there is another issue where sounds from the front aren't working. I've tested this in the area at the beginning with lots of fires - if you spin the camera around there's no soundof the fire when it's in front of you.

This is also an issue even without this fix though - no sound from the fires when they are right in front of you.

The sound mixing is such a mess in this!

I've tried this fix but it doesn't work for me - it does enable my rear speakers, but there's still an issue with the center channel and no sound coming from it.
Another issue with the guide is that I don't have a separate BIOEngine.ini config file - I had to use a tool to unpack a bin file to get to the inis.

  • Great!  🙂  I got it to work.  But now, I can't record my gameplay with Bandicam. ☹️  Anyone have advice on that??   Bandicam quit recording and gave me a failure to capture sound error just after I used the steps to fix.

  • This does not work for me (gtx 1080 with hdmi to NAD 758v3). I find it strange how the instructions tell you to place a file from win32 in syswow64 and from win64 in system32. Also: removing OpenAL32.dll from the ME1 binaries directory makes the game suggest a reinstall.

EDIT: After changing two things, it does work. Though others have mentioned that certain environmental sounds are gone. Have not played enough to be able to tell. The two modifications are: 1. add the win64 version as OpenAL32.dll to the ME1 binaries directory. 2. check the device properties for your AVR surround receiver. I set them to Atmos in basic properties in the sound control panel and in "additional properties", spatial surround tab: Atmos. Then it worked.

I had found a similar article, the other day, that suggested replacing the openAL in the game folder rather than the windows system folder, but they hadn't tried it.

When I first ran into the issue, I was standing next to a burning spot on the ground and I couldn't hear it from the front - only the sides.

I went ahead and did what the article stated, but put the soft_oal.dll file directly in the the game Binaries folder.  Then removed OpenAL.dll and renamed soft_oal.dll to OpenAL.dll.  At least in ME1, this worked for me, so far.

  • Indeed, I can confirm that just replacing Binaries\Win64\OpenAL32.dll in the game directory with bin\Win64\soft_oal.dll from the openal-soft package fixed surround sound (rear speakers) for me in ME1. Modifying .ini files or openal/alsoft settings was not necessary.
