2 - Use Unity / Unreal Engine / Cry Engine / Red Engine
Unreal Engine makes a lot more sense because that's what they used for the trilogy. CryEngine could also work, but the studio has no experience with it.
REDengine is not for sale, as far as I'm aware. That said, BioWare and CD Projekt Red always had a good relationship, and The Witcher ran on BioWare's Aurora engine, so who knows.

Besides, other than slightly affecting the final mission in ME2, the upgrades didn't matter at all. Unless you can actually start engaging things with the ship (which they should've done a number of games ago) it would just be an unneeded system.

perhaps at the most an option for some custom noseart for the Tempest. Also would like to board the Tempest without leaving the planet/base (but I understand that is a loading screen basically)... really what is lacking is a turret for the Nomad... or at the very least a telescope that allows you to tag far off enemies.

Nose art would actually be nice for both the Tempest and Nomad. The eyes and teeth from an A-10 Warthog would look pretty cool.
