dragon age inquisition controller support

just downloaded Dragon Age Inquisition, started the game and switched to joypad (i'm using a wired xbox360 controller) but the game won't recognize the controller (which works fine with every other game I have including games from origin) and now i can't actually get past the "start game" creen to change it back to mouse/keyboard. why can't i use my xbox controller? or reset to mouse/keyboard? As it is the game is now totally broken and unplayable - a total waste of $60. Do I have to download and reinstall the game?
