Game requires update to play

Stuck the disc in from having a few weeks off the game and the game says this app or game requires and update. It then proceeds to give me an " there was an eror with this update" . Cannot play game either connected to the internet or even when disconnected. Stuck in this process of failed update attemps.

Two questions. How the hell do I play the game either offline or online with  this error, and secondly why cant I not just ignore the update and play offline ?

Preventing me from playing my game that I own is really frustrating. Have attempted all the steps that people have for this error when they have a system update, but cant find anything relating to game updates. And yes, console is online and every other game works.
