having trouble getting to multiple player mode on need for speed hot pursuit for will console

My son wanted a need for speed game for his wii system so i found an older need for speed hot pursuit game and he loves it but we can only seem to play in one player mode. The game says that you can play up to 4 players but I can't find any option except to race one player vs. the field of computer operated cars. I created a case already and the answer i got back was to go into quick play mode and press the 1 button and there is an option to pick how many cars you want to be in the race. I tried that and all that does is lets you change the amount of computer operated cars that will be in the race. My son really wants to be able to race with other friends or myself or his mother but we have had no luck. Since the game clearly says up to 4 players, Im sure there has to be a way but I cant find the option. When I was younger i had need for speed hot pursuit 2 for ps2 and it gave you the ablility to race another player in split screen mode. Thats what i am trying to accomplish with this game.
