Need for speed on the Ps3

How do I start the first race when I cant figure out how to do a burn out? I have the Acceleration on the R3 up stick and the Brake on the R3 stick. It said to push R stick and hold. I have done that and it doesn't work. Help please!!! I would love to play this game. thank you
