Pre-Underground games were exclusively about racing. If anything NFS Shift is less about racing, since it also featured a drift mode, not to mention drag mode which is barely racing.
If you think that in today's day and age a NFS game can be wildly successful by only included grip racing and nothing else whatsoever, you are hopelessly obtuse.

I'm fine with the game featuring many different game modes, I'm merely exposing the flaws in Jabberwocky79's argument, though I use that term loosely.
Acknowledging them as a racing is another story. Drag is racing the same way crash testing is a demo derby. Drifting isn't racing period.
