How should a"need for speed" game look like
The "Need for Speed" series has a long history filled with innovation. Not everything was successful, but some features have set standards and clearly defined what "Need for Speed" should be.
How do I envision my ideal "Need for Speed"? Previous feedback led to the strongest part of the series, which gets many things right but still needs fine-tuning and a clear direction. Unbound feels like a dream: tuned cars, illegal street races at night, secret meetings, shady deals and bets, and the police always on the lookout. A clear strength of this installment.
Daytime, however, lacks clear definition. Pro Racing should stand out more distinctly from illegal racing. Recognizable facilities for various racing categories on well-known tracks would be ideal. Players could rise in rank and unlock rare tuning parts. Earned money through team and sponsor work would perfectly complement the nightly illegal races.
A set storyline is unnecessary because the player creates their own story in a world filled with subtle hints of time records, teams, and legends like the Blacklists.
To enhance the gaming experience, more realistic driving physics are essential. A physical damage model would also be sensible, without needing to be visually elaborate. Players could repair their cars in workshops or use costly mobile repair services. This creates expenses and populates the world with important spots. Overall, more expenses should be created to challenge the player and make achievements feel more rewarding. Cars would be purchased more thoughtfully and driven more carefully. High speed would no longer be everything; careful and anticipatory driving would be necessary to maneuver the car unscathed through traffic – an aspect that the Burnout series has already made legendary. A cockpit view is crucial to create the necessary atmosphere and keep the player engaged long-term.
Another important feature would be a functioning traffic system with consequences, adding to the atmosphere. Additionally, areas where players can get out of their cars – such as parking lots, underground garages, gas stations, car washes, meeting points, and viewpoints – would be desirable. The photo mode could also be integrated here.
The game world should generally be more organized. Open spaces shouldn't be cluttered with generic tasks, as this destroys the feeling. Iconic sections like highways, dangerous downhill races, abandoned drift courses in the woods, and perilous drag strips should be included. Opponent duels on straight tracks like in "Underground 2," where distance plays a crucial role, should be integrated, but only for shorter distances. Hidden tuning shops, workshops, and car dealerships are also important elements that will keep players engaged for a long time.
I would set the game in 2005 to revive iconic cars. A dark setting and DLCs that expand the game year with new cars would be ideal. Far from electric cars and soulless vehicles.
If you look at my concept, you’ll see that all these elements have appeared in earlier parts. They just need to be combined.
The best features united in one game.
