NEEDED features for NFS Unbound

Goodmorning to any who read this, or what ever time of day it may be for you.

I have been playing the NFS franchise and have seen it from the pulse pounding days of Hot Persuit 2, all the way to the latest installment, Unbound.

This being said, I have seen the franchise at its highest, and it's lowest, and as someone who builds and races cars in real life, I feel like my perspective might provide some additional ideas for the design team to REALLY grab the audience they are aiming for.

Now, onto the suggestions.

Quality of life:

-Extended customization using existing parts from unique cars.

For me personally, theres nothing more disappointing than going to customize something like the 350z, going to the headlight and tailight categories, and seeing that I cant apply the items from Rachels 350z from NFSUG2. I think as a whole, the customization is suffering from unique kits and parts being locked to unique cars you can't visually customize. The only reason for this, is encouraging players to buy and use those cars, but we never do, because we want something that is truly our own. Unlocking these items would better attain that goal, and the primary draw to the game from players.

-Race types displayed in Playlist car selection.

This is a no Brainer, and I'm honestly astounded this hasnt been a feature since Day 1. Yes, you can memorize the tracks, but new players shouldnt HAVE to do that.

-Ability to que as "on call" for race Playlist.

This is another feature I'm amazed has not be implemented yet. Players should be able to activate an "on call" status, where they are avaliable for all players on all platforms, regardless of lobby. This will allow for players to jump into races far faster and keep the action up, and minimize downtime.

-Ability to choose songs they want to hear in-game.

Something similar to what we have seen in pervious entries in the franchise would be welcome, and would be embraced by players who have not chosen to mute the soundtrack and play a Spotify Playlist in the background.

New game features:

-A dedicated "car meet" environment.

What I would love to see here, is something similar to the garage in NFS Heat, where you can view others rides behind you, but in a meet setting, though, I would still settle for the garage from Heat.

The ideal execution for this in my head would be players getting to choose a car they want to put up for "display" out of thier garage. At this meet, players would get an overview of others performance stats, tracked stats with that car like wins, takedowns, chases escaped, etc... and get to vote on thier favorites. They would be incentivised to vote by receiving XP and cosmetic items for voting. The reward for receiving the most votes, or a certain number of votes would be an XP and cash boost with that car for a set amount of time, and unique badges for their player cards, as well as decals and clothing items as long term rewards.

-Freeroam player challenges

This is yet another feature we had that has been cut from the game, and we last saw in NFS 2015. The ability to challenge a player in a point to point race or drift event was great, and it was a cool way to see what other people had going on with thier cars. It encouraged players to cruise around in their favorite car, instead of just their fastest, because people wanted to show off the car they were most proud of and challenge other players with it. The player base for NFS 2015 still regularly uses this feature to this day.

-Native Spotify integration.

This one is a bit out there, but certainly doable. It was done all the way back with Forza Horizon 3, but we haven't seen anything similar since. It would allow players to inject thier own NFS Playlist without requiring EA to acquire licensing rights to fan-favorite songs.

-Different freemode challenges.

We need something more than the recently added meetups. There just isn't enough to do outside of races. Having random events to rack up the most drift points on specific roads, or see who can jump the furthest distance off a specific jump would really spice things up. Something similar to the old Forzathon events we had in FH4. NFS could really use it.

-Persuit events and "Most Wanted" system.

Let's be honest here. A lot of the draw to a NFS title since Most Wanted has been the police. And honestly, they have been neglected since then, never receiving proper attention or a proper sspotlight. This could be solved with new event types and a new system that implements a "Bounty Level" or a "Most Wanted" leader board.

The way the bounty system would work is this. Players rack up a global bounty level the more they interact with the police and escape. That bounty score goes up and reaches levels until the player finally gets busted. This bounty level unlocks exclusive items, decals, parts that can be used in persuits like the return of persuit breakers, and maybe even special car rewards for reaching the highest level like the police Charger, or police variants of exsisting cars we have in game, similar to the ones we had in the most recent Hot Persuit, which Criterion worked on. As the players bounty gets higher, police get access to persuit breakers like in Hot Persuit as well. This would be an amazing system and really help NFS reach peaks it hasn't seen since Most Wanted.

New events like a "team persuit" event, where players will drive to a point, wait, and get teamed up with other players to see who can maintain a persuit for the most time, with the timer ending when a teammate losing the police or getting busted, and offer a large payout that scales with persuit time. Events like this could even offer "bounty XP" boosts.

More cars:

This is a given. We are going to get more cars, but here is my wishlist anyways.

In closing:

This is what I want to see for NFS Unbound. With the franchise moving forward to newer installments, the list would be a lot longer. I feel like most of these are reasonable, and in all honesty, what the game would need to truly reach its potential.

If anyone has any additional suggestions, please leave them below. It seems some of my suggestions are already being asked for by the community.

To Criterion. Glad to see you guys back at the helm. Let's get this franchise back on track, as fellow NFS fans who grew up playing these games, and as a community. Together, we can make this the king of all racing franchises again.

  • Great post with some solid ideas.

NFS clearly has a loyal and keen player base, willing to spend their money on a decent product

Unbound has the potential to be a first class online arcade racer, leading the pack and breaking new ground in the genre

I have seen a whole host of excellent, implementable ideas, that the product team at EA and Criterion could use to build a roadmap to building a first in class online arcade racer

A lot of these ideas could be implemented in a season type format, similar to how Fortnite and other similar season based games. Evolving the map, races, cosmetics, and features over time.

Why invest in a new title when you can take the season approach and enhance the existing product into something th player base is so desperate for?

How you commercialise that? Over to you guys at EA 😃

  • There is really only two things holding this game from being able to pull something like the Fornite seasons concept. That would be the branding and marketing

I can't tell you how many times I called NFS Unbound "Heat" by mistake, because the title of the game is just so bland and forgetable, even if the game is solid. And with the game being marketed as a full game and not a live service game, it would be really hard to go that route with this entry.

I think this idea for a future entry would be the best route to go. The question is, how do we have a live service NFS that isn't a micro transaction pay-to-win mess? It's really hard to strike a balance, and that's likely why outside of NFS World, we haven't seen this attempted yet.

I think going into the next entry, if we can meet those goals though, we'll have the best NFS in years.

I don't know much about marketing, but perhaps you are right in that a season concept that evolves the game us best left to a future release

Regarding the micro transaction element, that would be critical to the viability of a season based version of NFS. But IMO it doesn't have to be pay to win.

Fortnite makes money through selling cosmetic upgrades that don't give players an advantage. They just look cool, and provide the players a way to create unique avatars.

NFS could do something similar, leaving the actual race mechanics as they are. They are already doing something along these lines by selling customised versions of certain cars alongside each new volume.

Hopefully this model can be enhanced if it has proven to be commercially viable

@Thump3r_77 If Need for Speed does basic customization Items as Time Limited Individual purchases I will lose interest in the franchise as a whole (I don't mind packs that you can buy at any time)

I know it is a business model that works but I'd hate to make minimal purchases that stack up way more than just buying full packs without things being limited time

We're already paying for a full game and a vital part of the NFS experience is the customization alone, if locking Neons and Airbags already caused an uproar to fans in Payback, I can't even imagine individual customization parts being sold separately being a popular with prior fans

Modern consumers I guess would bite, but it'd be like commiting treason to the rest of the existing community
