I'm gonna assume you got these numbers from Steam charts.
This only counts the number of people playing NFS Unbound on Steam alone. It doesn't count the number of people playing the game on EA App, PS5, and Xbox Series X / S when the game does have cross-play.
That being said, the low playercount for NFS Unbound on Steam doesn't look very good. Especially when comparing it to the older NFS Heat which has a higher playercount on Steam, despite it not receiving any updates like NFS Unbound does.
@TheRealJonywhen you go on the servers there are option 1 empty or option 2 everytime the same players.....
The game is dead because the devs are doing nothing for the game and update Vol. 2 are the badest update what i have ever seen.
Players leaves the game and after 5 months only one update the bring the features there are at release should be inside, are not a glory.
And btw. Mods can be now used ( only single Player some works in multiplayer too ) but the modder make a better NFS as the devs..... shame to the devs and EA.

It's a different story for me when I mostly see 15 different players in a server every time I play Multiplayer Lakeshore Online.
Very rarely I would see the same players in a server.
The only racing games I would see the same players are both The Crew 1 and 2, considering the age of the games (The Crew 1 is almost 9 years old and The Crew 2 is almost 5 years old).

I stopped playing NFS Unbound a lot myself.
When Volume 2 update released two weeks ago on March 21, 2023, it took me almost a week to complete everything in the Volume 2 update and now I have nothing to do once again.
I do agree that the new content in the Volume 2 update, such as the Hot Laps activities, should had been included at launch back in December 2022.

I am aware mods can be used in NFS Unbound. Something that both The Crew 1 and 2 don't have.

Its so sad its such as good game, my only problem is the 16 player lobby. Its not fun to just wait 5 minutes for 1v1 race. Forza 5 has 20k daily and its such as garbage.
Nope I play solo, I like the freedom, I want to race when I want not to wait for players to make upgrades and stuff and waiting for them. I stopped playing anyway, I dont like how they changed map lists. Plenty of tracks are now in night and I hate night races, have my monitor on max brightness and its just looks awful, I hate night races.
