Best franchise building option in NHL 23 franchise

After attempting several seasons with several different teams I have come to the following conclusion:

Unless you can pick a player who will be NHL ready in three years or less your draft picks are a total waste.

You will be lucky to find those players outside the 1st round, so basically any pick outside the top 15 is a 5 year investment which may yield NOTHING after 5 years.

You can trade those picks for established players with KNOWN skills who can contribute immediately.

I was able to turn the Blackhawks into a playoff team in one season by trading overpaid vets for picks, using the lower picks to get veterans who could contribute immediately, using the freed up cash in FA and using the higher picks I stockpiled to build a great minor league team

It would take at least 5 years to accomplish the same thing by using those picks solely in the draft

It's definitely the easier way to do it. While a few teams IRL have managed to draft a great core of a team (Colorado and Tampa come to mind), the Vegas way where you try to add the best players that become available is safer. You might get screwed by the draft lottery (like Detroit) and that can be a year wasted. But adding established players... at least you know what you're adding.
