If you're still having trouble with this, try using a different name for your team. We're seeing this happen when a name is chosen that already is in use by another team.

my friend is getting this error, we have done everything imaginable, including fully uninstall and reinstall the game and have used some very obscure team names so not sure what else to try
I am currently having the same problem when trying to create my team. I have changed my team name multiple times and added extra letters but still is not working.

my friend is on xbox series x, he has even resorted to putting in random gibberish letters for a team name and it still is giving the same error.

Ask your friend to clear their personal saved data. Press the Guide button and then highlight the NHL 23 tile. Then, hit the Menu button. It's the small one to the right of the Guide button with 3 horizontal lines on it. Next, go to Manage game and add-ons > Saved data. Delete the file with your gamertag on it. There is the risk of losing offline saves and changes to settings you've made. Normally, those download from the cloud, but I can't guarantee this.
If that doesn't help, ask if they have a custom gamerpic. If they do, they should update it to a default image.

Unfortunatley neither option worked, already had a default profile picture from just setting up xbox account but changed to a different default picture and still getting error

Thanks for trying. Next, clear the alternate MAC address with these steps:
Go to your Xbox Settings
Go to "Network", then "Advanced Network Settings"
Click on "Alternate MAC Address", and then click "Clear"
