Who did it better, NHL 09 (2008, PS3) vs NHL 23 (2022, PS5)

First up:  Skating in open ice with the puck

NHL 09 has an animation where you put one hand on the stick, push the puck ahead, and enter more of a sprint.  You lose a lot of agility and puck control, but get more straight ahead speed, which is how it works in real life:

In NHL 23, you flip the puck in the air to yourself and immediately regain control of it, which is a really dumb looking animation, and you suffer almost no loss of puck control or agility, but  briefly lose any speed/agility/acceleration penalties for carrying the puck, and confuse the hell out of the AI defenders in the process:

And if you're feeling really spicy, you can flip the puck to yourself behind your back all the way down the ice!:

  • The video of the behind the back self sauce was something many of us spoke to Ben about in NHL 21. He actually said it wasn't supposed to be in the game then. Unsure what has happened since then, but I have noticed it happening quite often.

  • Beauty post. 10/10.

The behind the back sauce will be left in the game, because it gets all the streamers yelling OOHHHHHH and laughing like hyenas. They love it and if the streamers love it, it'll be left in the game ☹️

  • Part 2:  AI puck management

In NHL 23, Offensive AI players seem content with skating themselves into bad situations with the puck and then doing nothing once they get there and giving up the puck very easily (and often getting destroyed by hits in the process):

All those were from the beginning of one game, I could have captured many more.

In NHL 09, the Offensive AI often either dumps the puck in, finds a passing option, or goes off the glass and out when he has no good options with the puck and feels pressured:

Maybe not perfect, but all better options than skating with blinders on into a pokecheck or a big hit.  And these "imperfect" plays with dump ins, pucks off the glass result in more loose pucks and less robotic, structured play, like hockey. not the Harlem Globetrotters on ice like EA wants for NHL 23.

Again, this is NHL 09 (2008, PS3)  compared to NHL 23 (2022, PS5).  According to a website I just looked up, the PS5 is THIRTY times more powerful than the PS3, and we have WORSE AI (in many ways) on the hockey game on PS5.

    That maneuver is humiliating.

I can't imagine anyone working close with the game being happy by seeing that behind the back self sauce.

Just the concept, "behind the back, self sauce". Not even a phrase IRL Hockey terms.

It's everything you don't want to see.

The motion by players in thoose old clips looks smoother compare to the more clumsy feeling you get from thoose 'new clip'.

Nah I think were done with this RPM tech, it dosent feel like it's compatible with ice hockey games.

We have reached the end of the road and it's time for something new.

I hope EA feel the same or at least have a rabbit to pull out of their hat.
