...Average shot speed in gameplay appears to be a bit too high...

Here, I present to you a screenshot of a calculated shot speed from a game of Play Now (Offline Versus).

For reference on the x and y coordinates - the coordinate (89,0) is where the net is centered on the goal line. the coordinate (25,0) is the beginning of the offensive zone from the blue line. any x-coord above 89 would be a shot taken from below the goal line. the y-coord ranges from -42.5 to +42.5 , the width of the ice. The t is the difference in time between two spots of the shot (x0, y0, t0 is just after the puck left the stick, x1, y1, t1 is just before the puck came into contact with the goaltender), and displacement measures how much distance the shot covered between the two points.

Now that I have that out of the way, this snap shot was taken by Taylor Raddysh - who has 87 Wrist Shot Power, 88 Strength, and 88 Offensive Awareness. This shot was also taken just seconds after a zone entry - no pressure gauge impact here.

This was with Base Sliders...NHL.edge reports that only 3 forwards have even sniffed 100mph with a shot so far this season. Each of Kapanen, Tage Thompson, and Owen Tippet have 1 shot of at least 100 mph. That is 3 shots out of over 31000 recorded shot attempts this season.

  • Thank you for providing this information. I've been saying these things for years but my math is horrible.

On top of all of that, it makes the goaltenders look absolutely ridiculous with their save animations. Every year up until the past 2 years I've tuned the shot power down to make it look more realistic but with the spiderman goalies you can't beat them with hard shots in good areas unless you crank up the power even more than the ridiculous speeds they already have set.

Would be nice to see goalie reaction times turned down and shot speed turned down to emulate the sport. That way when a hard shot does come off a stick it feels impactful in the game.

Honestly, that can be changed with sliders too, and I personally don't have too much of an issue with the state of goalies at the moment (in offline versus type modes) - they do occasionally have the moments where their animations just transition at superhuman speeds, but honestly, not my biggest concern at the moment.

Probably depends on the game speed you set it at. Right now on game speed 1 for my sim sliders, if I tune the shot speed down and put goalie save reaction speed to 0, they'll save 99.9% of shots.

Hmmm. I haven't tested that yet. Will have to try that eventually.

Weirdly enough, I did these shot tests last year, and I think they were coming out to like. 68 mph.

@razor2rosary Thats cause they are unable to properly balance. They either greatly decrease or increase sliders to "fix balancing issues"

Wow this seem to be where the Einsteins hang...

How do you even calculate this..

    Love it!

I say most common slapshots is between 84 - 90 and after that it starts to be real bombs.

Parayko must have been really close. (To 100) Terrifying shot.

Cant remember seeing any over 100 yet..

Wouldn't it be cool addition to have a mph counter in the game too...?

Edit: Funny thing, Parayko had one at 101mph tonight against AZ.  But hit the glass.

  • @razor2rosary I knew it that I wasn’t crazy.. I have the shot power reduced and it’s still fast. But the goalies reaction time is also faster. I have my slap and wrist shot power ratio accordingly. The hardest slap shot 104 and wrist shot max at 81. So Ill just use math to figure out the equivalent..
BUT what I dont know is accuracy.. how accurate a wrist shot is vs a slap shot vs a one timer. Does that site have info on accuracy? I dont play hockey, but I figured with a wrist shot one can be 90% accurate and a slap shot, you might get 70%.. but I’m just guessing.

In terms of shots hitting the net for accuracy?

Usually around 25% shots miss the net. Also around 25% are blocked.

I'd argue that 60% of slapshots hit the net, maybe even closer to 50% considering the distance they're typically taken from.
