I just saw a commercial for NHL 24 during the intermission of the Hockey Night In Canada broadcast of Leafs vs Lightning. Doesn't that mean the target audience is people who watch hockey?
There was not a single lacrosse goal or hip check in the 1st period of the game. There were lots of puck battles, loose pucks, missed passes, boardplay, chips/clears out of the zone, dumps into the zone, etc. There also weren't any special power meters on the ice and goalies didn't lose their minds after some passes were completed in their zone.
Why would they make the game not resemble hockey and then advertise it to people that watch hockey?
Also, for all I hear about how small the budget is for NHL because it is a small market, it costs 100k to advertise on HNIC based on a quick google search.

What game are you playing? NHL 24? And it doesn't resemble hockey? Have some of you forgotten that VIDEOGAMES are supposed to be FUN? This obsession with a 100% simulation of every single element of the sport is going to drive some of you insane. You're NEVER going to get it.
If you want 100% hockey - then go play hockey.
You would have more fun with this game if you didn't take it so darn seriously every time a move becomes OP, you end up on the bad end of a bug/animation glitch or god forbid EA take some chances to make changes to the gameplay to freshen things up. Why not take the time to master the maneuvers in this game that are getting the best of you while EA tries to address it in a future patch, rather than just constantly beating this drum of "tHey doN'T kNow HocKeY?"
I've currently lost 5-6 games in a row in OVP, I can't seem to find my groove in WoC yet and I've had a few successful endeavours into HUT, but ultimately getting whooped by much more skilled players.
Am I getting all salty about the hip check? Am I all upset that sometimes poke checks don't do what I want? When a dump-in gets snagged by a defender with a vertical comparable to an NBA stater, do I get all "o000o00 eA DoEsn'T KnOw hOckEy"? I've seen maybe 3 Lacrosse attempts in the abundance of games I've played.. is it rustling my jimmies to the point where I need to rage post on the forums? No. Because these are things that can be addressed by bringing up the topic without the rude comments about the knowledge of the sport held by the team who develops this product.

@KidShowtime1867but have you played competitive 6s for years? Because there's already an arcade mode (3s eliminator) for those who want to skate/pass through people and "have fun". The game is suddenly taking a turn towards arcade this year and that's why many of us are disappointed.

When you buy a hockey game, you expect the game to play and feel like hockey…. No ? If I would buy a game like NBA Street compared to NBA2K, I’m pretty sure I know what I would get if I bought the NBA Street one. Over the top B Ball with an Arcade feel. If I bought the 2K one, I would want for it to be the closest representation of the sport.
That's where people are lost and confused when they buy NHL24. A fully licensed game by the NHL.

No. When I join my beer league team 2-3 nights a week, I expect THAT to feel like hockey.
When I fire up NHL 24, I expect to play a videogame.

@KidShowtime1867Well the definition of a hockey videogame is a very personal definition by different types of people. I never ever want to play online because to me that’s not hockey.
This is the greatest sport on earth, don’t make a mockery of it….
If I wanna go crazy once in awhile playing against my daughter on the couch, I’ll fire a 3s game with the mascots. Or else, I play my setup that’s the closest to the real sport possible and that’s what brings me joy. To me all the little nuances, all the little details is what a game of hockey should be. But that’s just my opinion.
To each their own.

Well to start, he admitted that he doesnt want a 1:1 hockey "simulation" so not sure what youre addressing here.
I dont think "not taking this so seriously" will result in the game actually being fun. You know wahts fun about hockey? tic-tac-toe plays, sniping goalies on good shots, hitting people how and when it makes sense, net-front scrambles, and using some general hockey concepts to win at a video game thats allegedly trying to replicate hockey.
none of the things I listed above happen nearly consistiently enough nor in situations when it makes sense to "feel: like hockey...
sprinting down the wall then holding your stick out and spinning in the corner to start you streetball 1v1 showdown while the 8 ai players stand still to watch isnt hockey.
this end-to-end rush game of a 1v1 showdown with no off-puck movement or useful support isnt hockey. this does not resemble even decent 12U hockey in terms of off-puck movement to create time, space, and passing plays.
What real life game have you watched recently that looks like NHL 24? link it cause I want to watch

I explicitly said I understand it is not going to be a 100% sim, especially online. People (me included) want to play shorter periods online and get someone accurate stats, it can't be completely realistic. I am totally ok with some liberties being taken with the game for that to happen. Worse goalies, less missed shots/passes/mishandled pucks, faster game speed, etc, are all fine with me.
However, the general flow of the game should be similar to a real hockey game, just with those and possibly other liberties taken.
If I could sum up the biggest issue that permeates this game, is that it is too easy for one player or team to maintain control of the puck in all areas of the ice. The game is too in control and perfect.
On an individual level, skating and puck control are way too high, every defenceman is too good at evading forecheckers with skating like an exaggerated Makar/Fox, which is why breakouts are so boring an easy. You never have to go off the glass and out, or ring the puck around the boards, or even go d-to-d very often. Does anyone even ice the puck on the penalty kill in this game? You don't really have to. Just skate it out or make a pass.
I'll admit part of this is due to the fact that we can see all players on the ice all the time, but there are solutions to this - like having severe penalties to pass accuracy (attribute dependent of course) when passing to players not in the field of view of the player without possessing the puck for a certain amount of time first. Maybe we would actually have to clear the puck on rebounds instead of firing a perfect breakout pass to a forward 2 zones away?
Every forward glides around in the corners with players bouncing off of them like an exaggerated Thornton/Jagr, this is why offensive zone possessions look more like basketball than hockey. They tried to fix this with the exhaust engine but it is gimmicky, arcadey, and inauthentic.
On a team level, passing/puck receptions are too good. This may be controversial and I can provide video evidence, but there is so little skill required as far as how long you hold the pass button and (less so) where you aim the left stick when passing. Players make insane (and physically impossible) pass receptions all the time. Again, maybe you would have to go off the glass and out or around the boards, or (gasp!) dump the puck in sometimes.
And I'm not even mentioning the AI, which is atrocious and has been for years. AI players can't get the concept of going where the puck carrier is going instead of where he was a couple of seconds ago.

@Jagavekov
I tryed to ice the puck for 7 years but to no good really. Felt cool to do but didnt give me any advantage, 'just give away the puck for free' has never been a thing in this serie.
It's a shame, because hockey is so much about knowing when and where to give away the puck and continue to push or fall back for defence.
This game is much about push.- 2 years ago

This game is much about push. One of these days, I’ll take all you guys quotes and make a debunk video out of it 😉 I use the dump and chase often in my games and it works really great 😀 Heck, it’s not that I want to often dump, but sometimes the opposing AI doesn’t give us a chance to enter the zone cleanly 😆
- NeonSkyline212 years agoSeasoned Ace@Jagavekov I completely disagree with your 4th paragraph. Maybe you're not playing tough enough competition or something but I find that I am constantly wrapping the puck around the boards in my defensive zone or going D to D in my zone before initiating my breakout in order to open up a lane.
Are you playing high-level online versus or are you playing 6's? I can't speak to 6's.
