You'll notice here that the CPU releases the shoulder check button and makes contact on the follow through. That's why hitting is different this year; previously you'd just hold the hit button and then glide into your opponent. Now, you have the responsibility of timing the release in order to ensure the shove makes the most impact.
@KidShowtime1867 Why didn't you address the part that he was asking about (the speed boost)? I've noticed all of the top versus players using this speed-boost hitting to defend the rush and I've started doing it as well (though I'm not sure what the exact conditions are to trigger it... holding L2 to skate backward into the hit seems to help).
