NHL 25 RATINGS

Anyone see the full player ratings list on the site? What is up with some of these ratings?

Marner defensive awareness: 85

Nylander defensive awareness: 87

Really? One of the leagues best two way forwards over the years is lower rated defensively than the guy who can't make a defensive play to save his life?

Or how Sam Reinhart is a playmaker despite having multiple 30+ goal seasons and coming off a 57 goal season. Hyman isn't even on the list yet just came off a 50 goal year, the year prior scoring 83 points. Forsberg has both 85 DFA and 85OFA when in reality he's an offensive dynamo but is bad defensively. Why does Panarin have 90 defensive awareness???

I hate to be "that guy", but does this new dev team even watch hockey? It's as if for some of these ratings they just threw darts at a dartboard blindfolded. This can't be real

  • Wether or not those numbers are final, it sure makes one wonder how they are decided.

I wish it made some sense and could be explained, but it just can't. Well, I think most players are adjusted for their total to be where they want it to be, since the offensive and defensive awareness are the skills that most effect the total. So I get the feeling that the strongest skill might be at the right level, while the other is simply put where it needs to be for the player to be a 90, 91 or whatever.

I always adjust this myself before I start playing (using JFresh player cards). I just can't stand when fast players are not fast, players with confirmed hard shots are just average (because they are average or below average as a player). The game is so much more fun when players have their strengths and weaknesses.

I also always adjust player ratings until they are where they should be. I spend a lot of time tweaking players until things make sense.

Also just not giving a guy 90 defensive awareness because it takes 5 seconds to look at his career defensive metrics to see he sucks in his own end.

These things take such little time to look up if you don't know, it's like they don't try

  • "Ratings reveals" are designed to increase engagement. EA knows that people will argue and dispute them, which drives visits to their socials, the forums, etc. Whether the ratings discussions are negative or not, EA doesn't care - all they care about is you're talking about the game and remaining engaged through this depleted marketing campaign.

I understand that aspect, but it's specifically bad this year. I'm terrified to see the centers list

So you're saying that they give wildly incorrect ratings on purpose? I feel like giving accurate ratings for individual attributes would ALSO generate discussion so... idk if I buy that.

It seems like a way to let EA off the hook for the failure of not having good stats guys in their office by highlighting another (allegedly) intentional shortcoming.

EA has a full team of professional scouts, but ok keep going on

And? What's your point? If the ratings are so far off than the real players' on-ice performance, does the existence of that "team" mean anything? No. No it doesn't "But ok keep going on."

This is AN OUTRIGHT LIE that takes two seconds to disprove.

Go to the credits and view the PLAYERS RATING section. There are three names listed— Shane Malloy, who is in charge of every NHL/AHL/CHL rating & two Swiss player raters.

Maybe Malloy is working with his Fractal Hockey data team (of two other people) to calculate these numbers, but EA is not sending a team of ratings adjusters to games like Madden or FC

Scouts can provide insight and recommendations. The fact they didn't have hands-on in the development process would preclude them from getting a credit.

The name you mentioned is likely the person in charge of ensuring the ratings match the recommendations from the scouts.

The full player ratings list won't be available for a few days yet. Tues is D-men, Wed Goalies, Thurs complete list. As for them watching hockey, yeah, betting a lot of these guys don't, likely just watch clips and read a bit about various players to get a feel for what to rate a player. I could be wrong on that one. On that note however, some players seem better than they are due to who they are placed with on lines. Hyman, if not on a line with McD and Draisaitl, likely isn't putting up those points, so he would not be rated as high as others, same with Bouchard, whom I am guessing they will rate high, but if he isn't paired with Ekholm, and given a lot of minutes with the McD line, also likely not as good as he seems. So players ratings are more on individual effort, over how they are when paired with higher skill players. Playing a bit of devil's advocate here, but also being realistic. I can't speak for every aspect of their ratings, and it would actually be interesting for them to break down how they decide on ratings in different areas. I don't see that happening though, as they have provided hardly any info at all into anything.

So many aspects of this video game franchise that we love would "actually be interesting for them to break down" and yet... here we are. Left typing into the void. Existing as mere dollar-signs.
