Patent US20170259177A1

Just look it up and you'll know what I'm talking about. How I long for the days when the EA NHL series was a legit competition.

"the difficulty level of the video game may be automatically adjusted"

Ive said this many times, a handicap.

  • If you're going to implore people to "just look it up" - maybe you should do the same yourself?

This patent (US20170259177A1) describes a system for dynamically adjusting video game difficulty based on player behavior and predicted retention in single-player or non-competitive game modes.

The system focuses on single-player experiences or non-competitive aspects of games. This is because:

Adjusting difficulty in competitive play would create unfair advantages
The patent discusses adjusting game parameters that wouldn't be applicable in PvP (like enemy AI difficulty, level generation, item drops)
The examples and implementation details focus on retaining players through single-player challenge balancing

    Key features:

Uses machine learning to predict player churn rate (likelihood of quitting)
Adjusts game difficulty automatically and subtly based on these predictions
Monitors user interaction data and engagement levels
Can cluster players into groups based on skill/preferences
Uses "seed values" to modify game parameters without being obvious to players

The system aims to keep players engaged by:

    Analyzing player behavior and performance
    Predicting when they might quit
Automatically adjusting difficulty to match their skill level
Making changes that are undetectable to maintain immersion

Filed by Electronic Arts in 2017, the patent focuses on retaining players by providing an appropriately challenging experience while avoiding obvious rubber-banding or static difficulty levels.

Those of you who continue to parrot this patent as some kind of "proof" of ice tilt are only exposing yourselves as consuming click-bait headlines because you can't be bothered to actually read the details.

If you've ever played any offline game, you've encountered this before in the form of rubber-banding. The only thing new here is EA's ability to implement it while maintaining immersion.  You're literally playing against code when you play against the CPU, and this patent simply outlines how the game engine will adjust the code used by the CPU based on the human's habits while doing so in a way that isn't overly obvious. Anyone who actually reads this patent will easily conclude these methods can only be used in an offline setting in the way they're described.

Thread locked. We do not allow discussions about ice tilt. There is no scripting, DDA, handicap, etc, in any of our sports games.
