NHL 94 is considered, not just the best hockey game, but one of the great video games of all time. It only had 2 modes and was basic as it could be. Now you have so much crap in the game, that it is unplayable.
Chances are that if NHL 94 had HUT, you'd have people making the same complaints.
Once online competitive modes were introduced, it's like flipping a switch that turns casual enjoyment into serious business, and suddenly every small balance issue or technical hiccup becomes worthy of outrage.
