Just got off a support chat with EA and they basically punted to Sony saying it was a Playstation problem that was fixed with the last software update. Well, I'm up to date. I'm going to try and contact Sony now and see what they say. Here's what the EA support gave me:
(PXCC-3274) NHL 21 - Players unable to access HUT - Originally Posted 8th October; Resolved 9th October There were reports that NHL 21 players are unable to access HUT. Some players received getting the error - "failed to retrieve data" This issue is now resolved. The studio have released a patch on XB1/PS4 that players need to install to play HUT.

Try deleting the game and reinstalling, but do not load into NHL 21 until it 100%, fully completes installing. That has been the workaround for this while we investigate a fix. Thanks!

I have already done that and it didn't work. I'll try again even though it takes me an hour to download again. I've put hours into trying to get this fixed and EA support is about as bad as I could have ever imagined. I have gotten 3 different suggestions from 3 different support folks and none have worked. The last person told me it was a Playstation/Sony problem and I should contact them. Well, I did contact them and they basically were nice enough to look into it and verify that I do have the latest software... then they told me in a nice way that they can't fix another companies problems.

I'm really sorry for how frustrating this is. We're trying to get it resolved, but for now the only resolution is the one I mentioned. Making sure you don't load into the game before it finishes downloading is key. If it still doesn't work, you'll have to wait until this is resolved by us. If another workaround comes up, I'll post it here.

Just downloaded and waited until it was completely finished before starting. No luck - same problem. What is more than frustrating is that EA Support has closed my two tickets as "fixed" and I really have no way of knowing when this will really be "fixed". They will not call back even though I've tried at least 6 times now. I'm going to open yet another ticket I guess. Meanwhile, my son is able to play just fine in the other room.

It now works for other online aspects but still can’t access any features of hut after deleteinf then reinstalling

Hello, everyone.
Make sure you download and install both the game and the update before loading into the game. Do not load into it before both the full game and update have been downloaded and installed. For now, this is the only workaround we're aware of. We are still investigating a fix and will update as soon as we have more details.
- 6 years ago@EA_Aljo I tried this it doesn't work unfortunately seems like I just need to wait until its fixed. Payed for the extra 3 days for nothing it seems.
