Player Preferences for Line Chemistry in Franchise Mode

I wrote a post about this a couple of weeks ago, but I figured I'll give it a discussion of it's own.

I did some research early on and noticed that the player preferences seem to be completely random for every new franchise. I like the idea of line chemistry a lot, but for it to serve any real purpose, it feels like the preferences should be locked in. I can't see any reason why it should be a lottery if you get a Chara that doesn't block shots, or an Ovechkin that prefer to cycle rather than shoot... or any other thing that just doesn't make sense when you put your lines together.

I get that the coaches are random, and that can cause problems even if you put Pastrnak-Bergeron-Marchand out there and they are -3 overall because the coach wants something else.

But at least it would help if they were the same players every franchise. Otherwise you basically have to start the franchise, look if you got lucky with your top players preferences, and if not, delete and create a new one. And when you get good enough results for the top players, something will most likely be off anyway.

Apart from that, does it make sense to have a line which ideally consist of players who like to cycle/shoot/dump the puck? One would think that a certain mix would be preferable, not that every player necessarily like everything the same.

I hope this new feature will get the adjustments it needs to not only cause headaches.

What are your thoughts on this? Have you had mostly good or bad experiences of it so far?

  • For me personally, Franchise is just another tack-on mode I need to play for trophies, so I always end up using the Lengends team where chemistry ultimately doesn't matter. That said, I agree the amount of randomness can be a little annoying, but it does make sense from a developer's point of view; much easier/faster to create a RNG than to individually recreate extra attributes.

Good news is the more you play, the more your chemistry will grow regardless (assuming you win more than you lose, of course). I find a coach dedicated to balanced strategies offers the greatest benefits in the long run.
