Everybody receives some loan players and they are all one and done (though you can get multiple loan cards for the same player). Certain cards are buggy and it may appear that they have their contracts reset but thats just not the case - if you try and play with them again it won't work and will most likely fix itself next time you log in.

I can only assume in the near future we will get some loan player master sets to sink everyone in to. Free players won't have a value assigned to them (or they would be non tradable) so you can't cheat the system with multiple accounts and earn a bunch of free pucks and stacked teams. The pre order bonuses you are thinking of are probably the HUT cover cards like McDavid or premium bonuses like Gretzky
